can I use an Ar15 rifle buffer extention on a 308? or does the 308 AR use a different buffer extension tube? planning on putting on a magpul PRS.

the only difference between an AR-10 PRS and an AR-15 PRS is the cheek piece I'm pretty sure. So they almost have to use the same rifle tube. Someone else will chime in, welcome to ARFCOM.

The .308's extension tube is appx. 5/8" longer than an AR15's.

While the AR15's extension will work you will need the appropriate "shorter" .308 buffer designed for this application.

This will allow the longer bolt to retract fully without punching out the rear of the tube .... or worse.

For the rifle receiver extention the 5.56 and.308 are the same.   If you were using carbine extentions there there are some differences.
