Will be shooting Crows and coyote out to 300 yards. Is the ACOG up to this task or should I go with something else? What is a normal price for the ACOG? Thanks. |

The TA31 and TA11 ACOGs are great general purpose scopes, with nice clear optics. The plus factors of a TA31 or TA11 is being able to shoot close (i.e. inside a room and of little use for you applicaiton), the bullet drop compensation (BDC), which again at only 300 yards is of limited use for your applications (besides you can do nearly as well with a little practice and a mil dot or TMR scope) and the brigth aiming point (under the correct conditions is a plus). Lastly depending on you state laws, will you be hunting coys at night (if so some illumination of the scope starts to be interesting). However, for you listed applications I am thinking a nice variable power scope would work a little better. YMMV Since the typical ACOG run close to a grand (excluding a good buy on a TA01), you can also consider a nice 1" tubed Leupold (most likely you don't really need the adjustment range of a 30mm tube - but a Mk 4 is a nice scope ;-). Staying with the Leupold scopes for the moment (only because I have use them the most over the last several dozen years and not because they are the only choice) your lower cost option would be a matte finish 3-9 variable (or 2 - 7 if you are shooting running coy's in your state). I have been looking at one of the Leupold mid range tactical scopes (nice compact size for an AR), however, keep ending up with a Aimpoint, ACOG TA11 or one of the full size 30mm Leupold Mk4s (the full size Mk4s tend to keep getting taken from the ARs/M16 uppers to live on larger rifles ;-). I would check out SWFA (one of the sponsors) for options from Leupold, Nikon, IOR, Bushnell etc. |

Thanks for the advice. The gun will be used for work. Coyote and crows are basically the range in size of animals that will be targeted (a rare deer should also be included). The gun will also be used for fun. Shooting distance could definitely be farther than 300 yards. For work purposes the shots will probably be out to 300 yards but the potential is farther. again, thanks for the responce. |
Consider an accupoint as well. Made by Trijicon but is a variable power optic. Uses the same kinds of recticles. |
