50 Beowulf or 458 SOCOM.... (Page 4 of 8)
Took some pics of my new toys (I really suck at photography). I really let my OCD get the best of this me. I couldn't decide which one I wanted, so I bought both. I have another lower on the way, so I will have two complete rifles in a couple weeks.

| How come several companies now have .458 socom guns and uppers but only alexander arms has .50beowulf. I am really interested in a beowulf upper but I am afraid it may go the way of the dodo bird so I am not sure. Does it use the same bolt as 7.62X39 ar's or is it mostly proprietary parts? |
Hope to soon. I picked up 100 pcs of 458 brass, and should spend some of my vacation next week loading. Just need to figure out what load I want to try. I picked up a couple hundred in the 325 range. As far as the Beowulf goes, I only have two boxes of factory stuff. I've been waiting over a month now for brass to come in

Does anyone know if they offer a can for the .458 yet? Something that shoots a wad of lead/steel like that out of the little black rifle is just aching for some subsonic suppressed action. How about the .50 Beowulf? I know it's different from the .50BMG by a hair. |
Diameter wise yes, ballistically, not even close. |

Can you expand on that a bit? They are different diameter wise, correct? So a .50bmg can would not work. And I know they are vastly different in ballistics. All I know is that if I ponied up the dough and made one of these, I'd want to make an SBR, put a can on it and shoot the heaviest round I could find. I don't think I'd be using this for past 100 to 150 yards. If they don't make a suppressor or have plans to do so, I'd probably spend my money on converting a .416 Rigby CZ to a .510 Whisper and suppressor by SSK Industries. By no means a little black rifle, but both of those, for me, fall into the catagory of recreational/special purpose weapons. |
| I didn't mean it to sound like a 50 bmg can would not work on a 50 Beowulf, because I can not answer that. But the 50 bmg cans I have seen are huge and probably over kill for the 50 Beowulf. I don't think the .010 bullet diameter difference would matter. |

The last time I looked, .50 BMG suppressors were about 10 pounds, 2 feet long, and $2000.

Chances of finding one in a hurry would be slim to none. BUT, you could put in an order for one with Marty (the .458 SOCOM's designer) and, depending on his backlog, you might get it in a couple of months. |

"Is there a dimensional drawing anywhere online for the 458 SOCOM? I can't seem to find the exact specs anywhere. Rim is .473 and base is .543. Length is 1.575" I'm not sure about the neck length and shoulder angle. Does anyone know?" The cartridges should be fire formed and neck sized only since the shoulder is the part of the brass that makes contact with the chamber. I think that teppo jutso's website had a diagram of the .458, but I could be wrong. I'm sure I saw one somewhere once... |

| I feel its like asking the difference between a chevy truck or a ford truck. they are relatively the same one just has bragging rights of being bigger. they are both devastating rounds. I own a .50. I fell in love with the 45-70 many years ago and wanted that terminal performance. If you wait any longer there will be a .51 dooley hoo rifle coming out .....do you get my meaning. dont wait to spoil your senses in sending 4lb chunks of mud and dirt in the air after your round passed THROUGH its target and dug a sizeable trench behind its target. If you wait to see who comes out on top there will be another cousin coming out. Remember when your talking about BIG bullets and terminal performance at close range. SLOWER IS BETTER. Just my humble opinion..hy.gif |

| Its only my opinion but this isnt a bench rifle. I suppose you could bench it and shoot rounds at great distance with the arch of a rainbow. but this is a CQB battle rifle and designed to take down dangerous game...Again its only my opinion but this type of rifle is best turned into a race gun ...fast optics... fast draw. rapid target aquisition and take down large things like cars and trucks...If you wanna build a bench rifle....I did that too I shoot pennies at 200yrds. .223 (flat trajectory) fun tack driver...but the .50 is for slinging in front when stalking bad bad things...dont need the weight and drag of a bipod. |
I bought mine with no intention of hunting with it. As far as competing with it, that's a joke with the recoil this thing has. I like making holes in paper (among other things) BIG holes

| I just got my Beowulf a couple of weeks ago. I love the gun, its freaking awesome ! I also plan on getting a 458 Socom in the next few months and already own the "big boys" little brother Grendel also. Just wondering what all this Bull Shit is about having to run special mags in the Beowulf ? All of you saying this because the mags from AA have blue followers in them ? Take the followers out and compare them to the military green ? I have ! Even used a micrometer to make sure they were dimensionally the same and guess what ? They are exactly the same as 5.56 followers, spec for spec. I have ran 150 rounds through the gun so far using my 5.56 Magpul follower equipped mags and it fed perfect without a single MF or FTF ? So, where exactly did you guy's saying the Beowulf 50 takes "special" mags, get that info from ? Or are we all working with two different gen. guns here ? The only "special" mags I have had to buy are for my 6.8, 450 Bushmaster, and the 6.5 Grendel. Just wondering because my 50 works flawlessly w/5.56 mags. For the original poster, these two "big bores" aren't for long range, but at under 200 yards I'd hate to be on the receiving end, even if wearing full body armor. If your looking for a longer range I'd go the little brother route in the 6.5 Grendel or even the 6.8 SPC. |

I dont believe it would be the follower as much as the case rim (snagging) on the front of the mag or on its way up to feed. bore tolerance seems tight in mine (good and bad) nothing CLP cant fix right? I wanna post pics but im waiting till shes dressed (dont want you to laugh at the propoint). I would like to start a lenghty discussion about iron sights or not on this platform. My theory is...with the proven reliability of an eotech or other holo.. why mount iron. But I would like to hear other opinions on the matter...to me iron is not what I will train with and not what i will regularly use so why mount.. Knowing that many "operators" claim to merely fill the holosight window with their target and ...let slip the dog. This is not a long range gun and most officer shootings happen less than 15 yrds. any ideas? |
