I just got a scope, never had one before. I used it today for the first time on a range to try to zero it in. Unfortunately all the spots at the 50yd were taken so I tried to do it on the 100yd. The main question I have is that it was very hard to see the target. I thought at full 4x magnification, this meant the target should be 4 times as large as you'd be seeing it without the scope. Truth is, at 1x magnification, the target is smaller than just looking at the targets with the naked eye. So I'm confused and wondering whether I have this correct. A 4x magnification scope should that be about 4x larger than the naked eye? Or do I have this incorrect?

Sounds like you need to adjust the eye diopter.

The diopter controls focus only, correct? I am saying the scope doesn't "zoom" in much at all for a 1x4-30mm so at 4x mag, should I "see" the object 4x bigger in the scope vs my other eye?

Your correct, the target should be 4X the size vs the naked eye.

Make sure your looking through the correct end of the scope, otherwise everything will look smaller. On a 1-4X the larger end is the eyepiece.

Here's a link on some basics of mounting a scope: mounting scope

I have it mounted correctly already. I have no way of measuring, it just seems like at max magnification the target is about 2.5x to 3x magnified. Not a full 4x. Definitely not 4x. I was just trying to confirm if that magnification factor was what I was thinking, like binoculars. I was incorrect in my original statement at 1x target is smaller. It is the same after double checking last night. Thanks.

In a 1-4x scope the eye diopter can make the zoom seem "off".  I would put the scope on 1x and adjust the diopter until it looks as close to 1x as possible.

Eta: what scope is it?
