OK, let's try this again. I have taken the initiative to re-post many of the retro images that I had placed on the original Real Deal thread. Those who contributed to the first thread should feel free to re-post any pics they found that they felt were of interest to those of us who inhabit this dark little corner of the jungle. It may take a while to get it back to eight pages like it was (!), but this is a start.           Notice that the handguards are mounted sideways in this photo so the handgrip will be on the side. Also, the taped handgrip again. Here is that CAR-15 family photo that I had posted previously: Not a great photo, but an early AR-15 with what appears to be the brown pistol grip and fiberglass epoxy resin buttstock:  Notice the charging handle inside the "carry handle" and the sling swivel on the pistol grip. Also note that the AR-10-type handguards do not use a slip ring as we know it. This weapon is very likely ser.#000006 |

More images from http://www.lcompanyranger.com/ Notice that it seemed to be the trend to tape up the hand grips on many of these weapons. Also note the heavy wear, to the point where the finish is worn of the tele stocks, revealing the bare aluminum underneath.   The A1 in the picture below has the furniture completely taped up, including the stock and the handguards, making for one ugly rifle.   This RTO appears to have made a sling from surgical tube.  Notice the use of cloth camouflage on many of these weapons.

CMoH winner Franklin Miller (MAC V SOG) with a XM177 of some type... looks like a cleaning rod taped on. Captai Rick Rescorla at LZ X-Ray, he was later kille in the World Trade Center. Has an XM16E1  Good shot of an XM16E1  Looks like A1's heavly engaged  I thought this was cool. A VC "reward leaflet" showing how much each captured weapon was worth.  |

Nice job, BD! Check the picture of the 605; I think you'll find that you double-posted the same model 604 photo in error. It might be worth editing some of the old text, as well. This thread is shaping up nicely. Thanks to the mods for the tack! WOW that's cool. Is that the one that was for sale for like $22k? Also, does anyone know if 601's were large hole or small hole? |
| Crap...I'd like to try to find a real 601 upper but I'm gonna be using an SP1 large hole lower. And I'm not gonna convert it to small hole. Maybe what I'll do is get a large hole upper and dremel off the "arrow and R" on the sight to make it at least look more original. Then MAYBE dremel the forge markings off too. Unless the 601's did have them? Also, does anyone but Colt make largehole slabside uppers? |
Here ya go:  Model 606 M1, HBAR, no fwd asst Feel free to add it to your post above, although it isn't in the same profile-type view as the other photos. The group photo I posted earlier in this thread of the CAR-15 family has me puzzled... the belt-fed HBAR on the right has no forward assist which would lead me to believe that it's a Model 606, except that the 606 wasn't belt fed. The belt-fed model 611 had a forward assist, but the photo seems to contradict that fact. The 606 wasn't belt fed, so what is it? |

These should really be posted under Capt Richardson's Carbine Guide - but since we don't know how long it will be around I'm posting them here: U.S. Army Rangers speaking with Vice Admiral Metcalf during Urgent Fury [Oct 1983]. At least two M653's are present:  U.S. Army Ranger with M67 recoiless rifle and M653 during Urgent Fury [Oct 1983]:  U.S. Marine in Beirut [Dec 1983] with M16A1 - to the right [off camera] is a Marine who obviously has an XM177E2 [only the flash suppressor can be seen]. I have tried to find this series of images in hopes another picture might show the Marine to the right and the XM177E2 - haven't been lucky enough:

How'd THAT get in here??  Very astute of you. Coppola had full cooperation of the Phillipean gov't in making that film, including the F-5 flyover. Well, at least when the Hueys weren't being used elsewhere. I wondered who'd make mention of it. Sorry, couldn't resist.

In theory, but we only used the balloons for wind runs for mass jumps in training: at least in my time. In Vietnam, there were few mass combat jumps. But we had the capability. The helicopter insertions were the norm. Sorry about the size of the pictures, photobucket automatically resized them; they were bigger, showing the M-16's better. They had the duckbill flash suppressors. |
