[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Difference between "HIGH" and "Low" shelf lower recievers?????

Whats the difference between "Low Shelf" and "High Shelf" lower recievers? Which is better? Basically what or the advantages of one over the other?

Also which brand/type lower receivers are "high shelf" and which are "low shelf"?

functionally there is no difference, if all you plan to do is shoot it.

if you're ever planning to drop the coinage on a RDIAS or a RLL, then you run into a problem.

Most receivers are going to be low shelf. Colt is one prime example of a High Shelf receiver. Between that and their non mil spec trigger pins, I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would buy a recent manufacture Colt AR.

Therortically, which one is RDIAS compatible?????

though i really have no plans of doing a full auto conversion, im just curious.......

The low shelf is the one that is best suited for drop in conversions.

A high shelf receiver can be milled to spec if required, but its easier to go with a low shelf receiver.

The red circle shows the desired shelf height.

As a quick gun show rule the bottom of the safety/selector hole to the shelf should be 1/4 inch.

Anything less is a high shelf.

Colts use a web or pinned in block to prevent RDIAS installation. If this web or block is removed, the "shelf" is at the correct height.
