If you were able to sight it in without having the front sight post all the way over against the ear, it meets mil-spec. The sight post is usually off to one side or the other but having it too close to the ear affects your visibility when sighting. Also, it is sometimes tricky to sight from the front trying to determine if the sight base and/or gas block are canted.
