I really knew nothing about them until I saw their TV show.
Watched that show for 5 minutes, had a good laugh and never watched it since. They want to portray themselves in that kind of manner, I can understand it for marketing reasons, but it can backfire. I wouldn't want to spend hard earned money on the type of characters they portray to be on TV. Worst case, that's the way they are in real life. I honestly don't know nor care. There are other shops that actually rely on their workmanship to get their name out. |
| Red Jacket had a good reputation for several years. But things seem to have gone down hill since they got that show. They must be growing faster than their quality control can keep up with. Recently it seems to be getting more common to have people post about having problems with RJ rifles. A PSL and krink come to mind. PSL was a customer service shitshow, and the krink was just a hackjob all around. |
| You can't base the quality of their "production guns" from the idiots you see on TV. Sure, Will owns the company, but their regular line of AK's is built in another building, which is too mundane, or normal to show on TV. I had an opportunity to buy some parts from Will long before the TV show started, & I certainly got my money's worth. While the weekly show might make us think they are all buffoons, there is another building without TV cameras or lights, where sane employees are building great AK's. GARY N4KVE |
| thanks guys for the response. i think i will stay away from there rifles as prices are a little high. would still like to know more about the stock. however i like the show. yes there is too much drama but thats tv. its got to have that to get raitings as them sitting at a table pumping out ak's and ar's no one would watch every week. neat to see some of the crazy shit they do. And besides its a hell of alot better than jersey shore and that other dumb reality crap my wife watches. |

I'd heard that RJF had a pretty good reputation before the show. I have no idea if that's still the case.
The show where Will was giving the gunsmith shit because Will wanted to to just eyeball a rifle's headspace told me all that I need to know, though. |

I worked on the set of a reality show in the early 2000's. It was called "Average Joe", and was a pretty popular show at the time. The primary thing I learned from that experience: Nothing you see on a reality TV show, is reality. Even seemingly off-the-cuff moments were scripted. I'm not defending Red Jacket. Their quality probably has gone downhill given their increase in popularity with the show. But take anything you see on their show with a boulder of salt. |

Oh, I know that "reality" shows are BS, but if Will was OK with portaying himself as a buffoon ignorant of how to properly/safely assemble a firearm... I am forced to believe that maybe he really is. Either way: |

There were 240 or so shops interviewed for that show. They were chosen for good reason. The Three Stooges was great intertainment, back in the day.... and the beat goes on.
Will seems to be a nice guy and I believe it is his intention to put out quality builds, but good intentions only go so far and he can't do all of the work by himself. When he is depending on a shop full of guys that may or may not even own a Kalashnikov , how passionate can they be about doing things right when they may have little knowledge of the platform? I do all of my own work, but if I didn't, I would patronize a different shop.

Fame is a two way street. The owner of Red Jacket should of realized this, particularly how his company is being portrayed by the final cut of the TV show. They play the hicks VERY well. |

I'm sure the show has hurt their reputation a tad, but it probably has also made them millionaires. It's like American Chopper. Guys who knows bikes know OCC is far from the best shop out there, but the average people with money to blow don't know any better and just want those guys on TV to build their bike. Even with the bike crowd knowing OCC is over rated, it didn't stop the show from turning them into multi-millionaires. Same thing will happen with Red Jacket... I'm sure it already has to a smaller level. Rep might take a small hit, but their bank account will grow by about 1,000%. |

I always figured the famous "headspace" scene was added to show how much of a badass Will was at building rifles. ("He's so awesome, he doesn't even need a guage!") Followed off camera by someone quietly checking headspace of course... To the average Joe, that probably makes him seem more authoritative. We just know better. |

i have seen one or three episodes.
all of them dumber then the next. aside from some of the dumb crap they build and the AK sniper rifle that was tested and declared a success while shooting at a range target all of about 50' away, but it is the explosions for every thing they shoot. why does everything need to explode? its dumb and only entertains those who know nothing about guns and think now that movie explosions must be real because now they are doing it on tv. OH WAIT!!! i just answered my own questions. nevermind. carry on gents |

I'm not defending Red Jacket, but I will say that EVERYTHING you see on TV is scripted (that goes for all "reality" tv shows, especially for Sons of Guns). It's not fair to judge their work based on the shenanigans you see on TV. Every little thing on that show is scripted. I'm sure these guys are not the clowns that TV makes them out to be. The only bad things I've heard about RJF is their Krink builds - that the overall quality was not so great for the AKS-74U builds they were selling. I've heard it from a number of people, but again, that doesn't mean everything they do is crap. And certainly not because of how they're portrayed on TV.

I LOL'd at the JDAM comment. It's spot on! They shoot a rifle mounted grenade launcher and it blows a semi-truck up. |

Ah Top Shot at least made it clear they were just training rounds and they were just shooting bigger than usual exploding targets. |

Yeah, they did this on Top Shot because they wanted the guys to actually hit the target. Anyone could launch a grenade close enough to blast the target apart, but using the chalk rounds meant that they had to actually hit the exact circle. |
