Is there a list of mods where I could see the different things that could be done or added to a Romanian WASR. Just got one and I am looking to beef it up a bit with some goodies!

Anything at all?

If you specify what you want to do with the rifle, or you specify what accessories you wish to add you'll get a better response.
About the only thing you can't add right now is the kitchen sink, and I hear a well known manufacturer is working on an attachment system which will allow people to hang a sink, microwave and small wine refrigerator on their rifles. It should be available in June.

Ok here goes. I want to add an underfolder, some kind of rail system for the scope or other optics. I also want to replace the front wood with some kind of picatiny rail.

1. Underfolder or Sidefolder
2. Rail System
3. Picatiny rail replacement for the front wood
4. Different flash hider/compensator

What do you think?

Converting a fixed stock rifle to an underfolder is impractical. A different stock block is required to do it properly.

Side folders can be installed easily. TAPCO makes a composite sidefolder. You can also get a Romanian or East German made steel side folder. Some people like them, others don't. Ace also makes a side folding stock whch is very good.

If you want a flashhider as opposed to a compensator, you can get a 16A1 "birdcage" FH that is threaded 14x1 LH and works well. There are others available but I haven't tried them.

I don't have experience with a rail system, but many people who have such experience recommend Ultimak.

Thanks a lot for the input. Whats the difference in a flash hider and a compensator?

A flash hider attempts to hide the flash while a compensator attempts to reduce muzzle climb.

I definately rather a compensator then. Any other opinions into the rail systems?

If muzzle climb is a major concern, a '74 brake that's threaded 14x1 LH will reduce muzzle climb due to the increased weight at the muzzle, if for no other reason.
There may be one out there, but I haven't found an AK compensator that actually reduces recoil.

I found a few nice pieces on this website: http://www.tickbitesupply.com/ak.html. What do you think?

Sidefolder (this is the exact style I want, expensive though?)

That stock was designed to be used with a different stock block than the one on a fixed stock rifle. That's why it's shown with an adaptor.
The adaptor/stock combination will result in a significantly longer length of pull (which may not be a bad thing, since many find the LOP on a standard stock too short).
Other than that I don't have an opinion, as I've never handled or shot a rifle with that combination.

ETA: A rifle with the triangle stock is easier to shoot accurately than one with the Romanian or EG side folders IMO, due to the improved cheek weld.

Click on the Brownells link along the top of the page.

Get yourself a Wire folder stock (bolts right in).
Get yourself a Ultimak Gas tube rail.
Hit the EE here and get a T1 knock off or a real T1.
Either refinish the wood you have up front, or buy a set (Henderson sells some poly guards).

That will give you a compact, easy to handle AK.

They clean up real well. Here is a EG clone.

this is the EXACT stock i want for my ak's as well, but i saw that they wanted you to put a hole in the receiver and i didnt really wana do that.. Then i found one of the same design that didnt require any receiver mod, but it was like 250 dollars.. yeahhhhhh i have a hard time buying a peice that costs as much as the rifle.

If you ever find a cheap version please post it! :)

Just entered the evil world of AKs.  Got a WASR from Dunham's today.  Not a quality start but there you go, it's my first.  I'll be milling the magwell out soon for real mags.

Can you install the AR type collapsable stock on these WASR's?

As mentioned, the sky's the limit, it just depends what you want to do and how much you want to "invest" in the lowly WASR. Anything that will work with a regular AKM pattern rifle will work for the WASR, with the exception being the rear trunion. As mentioned already, it is a fixed stock trunion, so if you want a folder you'll need to buy one that works with this trunion, or go the troublesome and expensive route and replace the trunion.

Be advised that not all components and accessories are created equal. Hopefully I don't offend anyone, but I don't find the Tapco, ATI, or Israeli plastic stuff to be high quality. Also, receiver covers with scope mounts are usually worthless and a waste of time.

I put this package together by waiting patiently for good deals on components. It took me a couple months to get everything together, and then it was ready for the Duracoat. I used the Ace sidefolder, the Samson K rail, Burris Fastfire, the Ergo pistol grip, and the Phantom flash hider for mine. It already came with a G2 trigger, so that part was good to go. I bought the rifle before the panic set in, and after all is said and done I've got around $800 in the rifle, which isn't so bad considering what bare bones AKs are selling for right now.
