My son is planning on using my AK this weekend for the annual Boy Scouts shooting weekend. I shot it myself a few weeks ago, and noticed something very bad. I was shooting standing and when I was done I put the safety on, and then headed for the bench to see what kind of a group I could shoot sitting down. I leaned across the table, aimed and bag. I tried to pull the trigger but there was noting. So I sat up and had a look see. Turns out the safety was still on so it didn't cycle all the way. WTF???? So I was told by an expert or at least someone fairly competent with it, I probably had put the spring in wrong when I tore it down for a cerakote job. I took it out today to see if I could adjust the parts accordingly, but it turns out the trigger pin had backed out of the receiver on the right hand side, so I worked at lifting the spring and putting it back through the hole. I functions checked with out ammo as I;m at home with no place to shoot right now, but my son's trip is tomorrow. I'm afraid it might repeat it's self in his less experienced hands, and then he will be stuck with a dangerous situation. How can I fix this problem and insure the safety of his weekend? I have a couple of AR's he can take with no issues, but he took one last year and wants to take the AK this time. I will of course have him take the AR again if it can't be easily remedied. Thanks for any help with this. |

Get one of the trigger pin retaining plates and avoid the struggle with that shepherds hook spring. The plates are ok, but I have noticed that many of the retainer plates allow the trigger pin to rotate to an extent which can cause wear over time. The Tapco wire retainer (looks like the chinese L in the above diagram) is what I would advise to keep the pins in place and under pressure not allowing the pins to rotate. I would also advise replacing the pins if you notice too much play with new ones. |

Don't those retaining plates not work if you have a scope mount installed?

Yes, they work with the scope rail installed. |

You're probably thinking of the B-Square scope mount that wraps around the receiver and dust cover and mounts through the pin holes. The plate may not work that particular mount. |

Quoted: Did you replace the wire that holds the trigger and hammer pins in place? http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg329/AKshooter_photo/hooksall.jpg It's assembled correctly, but the pin keeps sliding out of the hole. I tried pushing the spring into the pin groves but it didn't help very much. I'm going to order the TAPCO part. |

Did you mean that it fired while the safety was on? Does it do that when the pin is in the correct position?
I personally don't like the plates. I use a hemostat for the last step if installing the wire. I use the century right way, putting it around the center support, pressing the spring down to install the hammer pin first, then using the hemostat to lift the wire above the trigger hole for the trigger pin. You could also have an issue were the wire is not fitting all the way into the groove of the pin, if the groove is too small or the wire is too large. Or the pin could be short for some reason. |
