I have a 7.62x39 Saiga Sporter.  It's barrel length is 20".   Is there a significant difference in accuracy between a 20" barrel versus a 16" barrel (all other things being equal).  I am wondering if it is worth the hassle of removing the sight base, cutting the barrel, recrowning it, and reinstalling the sight base.  I am planning on doing a 922 r conversion and am trying to decide whether I want to cut the barrel back at the same time and if so, what affect cutting the barrel would have on performance.

Any thoughts?

Wow- can you own a converted Saiga in CA?  I would think the 16" is optimal for the 7.62x39, as you probably will not get a lot more velocity out of the extra 4" with this round.

Bolster, Thanks for your 2¢.

You can own a Saiga in California as long as you registered it with the State in 2000 (which I did).   If you are interested, this is great summary of California "Assault" Weapons (http://www.calguns.net/a_california_arak.htm).

The Saiga Sporter was identified by the State as an "AK series" assault weapon, even though it lacked any "evil" features.

Cool. I learned something new.  It's nice that you can convert it, because you will end up with one of the nicest AK's in the end. My conversion should be done in a few days.

Bolster,

How did you deal with your old trigger pin and tranfer arm pivot holes?  Did you use the binding post method?

I use black nylon hole plugs from the fastener section at Lowes. Real cheap & easy and look like rivets.

Length will really only affect sight radius for irons, assuming the cut/crown is done WELL

Funny you should ask.  I bought the binding posts yesterday.  I just need to slightly enlarge the receiver holes on the left side and they will go in.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to get the bolt hold open in.  Should have taken a picture, because I can't remember where the spring for the BHO goes. Trigger-pin, maybe?

The BBQ black paint I bought is also pretty flat in comparison to the glossy finish the gun came with. I must have bought the wrong brand.

Bolster, are you talking about the shephard's crook?  If so, I am either going e-clip or retainer plate.

RS39,

Given my limited machining experience, by "WELL", I assume you mean there is more to cutting the barrel than using  a hack/band saw and recrowning it with a kit.

Is this something a gunsmith should do?  I was planning on cutting the barrel back to slightly over 16", threading it, installing my muzzle device (flash or brake), and installing a new sight base.

Do you have any recommendations?

I would definitely have it re-crowned.  There is almost no way you'll be able to cut it perfectly with a saw.  If it doesn't have a good crown, accuracy will suffer, and we want all the accuracy we can get with 7.62 x 39.

If you ever hung with a darts league...

If the release of the bullet is not 'dead nuts' equal all around, the final shot release will not be either consistent (which a marble and valve lapping compound can achieve) and on-target (only a good machine square can ensure).

Unless you need to crash thru lots of narrow door ways, it is way easier and cheaper to leave it at 20".
