| Are the 20 rd. Pro-Mag mags any good? Just wondering if anybody has any experience with them.....Dave |
|
I'll give an opinion Pro-Mags are generally CRAP like most after-market magazines. During the AWB I tried many AM mags from USA, Triple-K, Butler Creek, Pro-Mag, and others in a number of rifles and pistols. A few I was able tweak into working but most couldn't feed an entire mag without jamming. None of them I would bet my life on. For AK mags stick with genuine mil-surp. and function test them in your gun to sort out any problems. JMHO/YMMV MEC-GAR are the ONLY after-market mags that actually work for me. Very good mags. |

We keep some on hand for test firing purposes, but they all fail in the same way over time. The soft plastic lip at the front which locks into the barrel trunion wears away pretty quickly, and eventually there isn't enough of it left for the mag to lock in properly. They should have put a metal insert in there like real Bulgarian mags have, but it costs more to do it that way. Result = when you rotate the mag in, it just keeps rotating forward after the rear locks into place and falls out of the gun, since the front lip is chewed up. After that the mag is useless. Well, not quite useless... If you duct tape three of them together and fill the mag bodies with sand, they make a pretty cool doorstop. |

I bought a Pro-Mag AK .223 mag at a gun show a couple of weeks ago. I have tried to use it four times and each time it jams after the first round. Unless I start hearing good things about them I will never buy one again. I would rather pay twice as much to know my gun is not going to jam from the magazine. |

Well, I like 'em, especially the .223 mag which after some minor fitting, works perfectly in my M90 screw build. I've already returned one 7.62 mag for the reason Duke-Nucem mentioned. Pro mag sent a new one in under 2 weeks round trip. I used the "worn" mag almost exclusively in a Yugo folder...maybe 750 rounds and a lot of inserting and removing before it failed. I need an extra US part, so I've swapped followers with a "normal" mag. I don't plan on buying any more 7.62x39 mags but as long as they will send a new mag, I'll keep using the .223/5.56 magazine. I'm not a big fan of Pro Mag products EXCEPT as mentioned above. ADDED: all 30 round mags |
Care to tell us how many cartridges were put through the magazine before it failed? |
Nope. We shoot a magazine out of each gun we build before it ships. Sometimes, if there's a problem, the gun needs some more work and then gets test fired again. We also tried using the Promags in a post-sample full auto RPK that we built, just to see what would happen. The Promags have seen alot of use in the past year or so, but not any more than the $13 metal surplus mags that we use for the same purposes. The no-name Euro mags work just fine, and the Promags... well we aren't buying any more. Look, the whole point of an AK is to be reliable. The AK is not as ergonomic, easy to customize, or as accurate as other rifles. Why compromise the ONE thing it does better than any other rifle just to save a couple of bucks on a magazine, when you've already spend hundreds of dollars on the gun and ammo to begin with? P.S. IMHO using a magazine to make up for missing US parts is unwise. Why be a felon every time you borrow a mag from a buddy at the range or try out that cool drum magazine? US parts aren't hard to come by or install, and they can actually improve the quality and function of the firearm. They don't cost very much compared to AR accessories or other custom parts, so what's not to like? |
What gets me is what if your life's on the line and you don't know how crappy their product is. On the range it's frustrating when the shtf you're dead.. Get the word out to friends family everyone you know that Pro Fag sucks |
|
I'll tell you what the most embarassing thing is. I've used my Pro-mags at the range probably 3 times each by myself, no problem. Take my buddy to the range bragging about how reliable my Vector AK is and then... jam after jam after jam... and all I brought were my worn out (after prob 50 rounds each) pro-mags. |
