I'm new to the "dark side" of things, being an AR guy in the past. I do really like my AK's and have endless fun shooting and cleaning them as well as making slight improvments in accuracy. My question is about my Polytech sidefolder. It's a preban with the 386 in the circle, a "CS prefix and a 4 digit ser.#. However, no other numbers appear with these numbers, like the year. I read on this forum that the year of manu. was included in the serial number, but not on this gun. Is this normal? Thank you.

The year is only in the post-89 ban rifles. Not the pre-89  rifles.

What you have is normal. the CS is the designation for side folder.

That makes sense, thank you very much.

Not a true statement. I own pre89 Kengs and Sile imported rifles and they have "85" for 1985 in the serial numbers. They are both factory 416 guns. None of my factory 386 guns have dates in the serial numbers but there were pre89 guns (mostly factory 416 that i have seen) with dates in the serial numbers.  I have also seen the red sidefolders, factory 416, with the date in the serial number.

Here are a couple of examples but there is no gospel on these Chinese as I have a very early import Kengs 416 underfolder that has a "11-85-762-xxx" serial number. No "PF" designation at all.
Factory 416 sidefolder, PS87-762-xxxx

Factory 416 fixed wood stock, PW85-762-xxxx

Pretty good website but not 100% gospel.

Thanks for the info guys. BTW, does everyone here like the feel of the sidefolders better than the underfolders while shooting? I have both and like both about the same, although the sidefolder locks up better.
