What is your impression of the PKM Machine Gun?

If you have shot one, did you like it?

How would you rate it for belt fed machine guns?

Is it better then an M-240?

I've had experiences with several PKMs.  I'll try to briefly list the obligitory "good" and "bad" impressions that I had...

Good.

Easy disassembly, cleaning, etc.

I have never, ever seen one fail in any way.  I have never heard anyone who has seen a first-person failure.

Very accurate.

Adjustable gas-regulator.  Good thing for sketchy ammunition from various manufacturers, etc.

Bad.

Barrel change requires you to lift the top cover and feed tray cover to slide a little, teeny, tiny slide to the left.

Gas regulator requires spent shell or tool to adjust.

It's a long, long gun.  A shorter barrel and a decent adjustable or folding stock would be nice.

Safety is awkward.

Sights pretty much suck balls. (...that's a technical observation...)

General stuff.

It feeds from the right to the left.

Non-disinegrating belts.

Comparing it to the Mag 58s... I don't know.  I'd have to say my initial thought would be that they are equals.

240B is a much better MG IMHO, I've shot both in Afghanistan.

The PKMs do break, the Hajis can break anything, and they did indeed break many PKMs in the unit I was an advisor to. Usually it was recoil spring assemblys.

On the other hand, when clean and well oiled PKMs run like a top and are great guns. If you don't have a loader the belts are a PIA to load, the Hajis didnt have loaders so they loaded the belts by hand.

I supposed I'm preferential to the 240B, us americans kept them clean as opposed to the hajis with their PKMs.  Ours always ran 100%, I felt they were easier to control and were more accurate when firing 7-10 round bursts.

The times we did fire both in engagements, we never had such a long battle that we had to change barrels so really can't comment on which one is faster. I admit I can swap a 240B barrel pretty quick as we trained on them.

Which one can you buy parts kits for?  How about whole guns by the end of the year?  I would love to buy a semi-M240 but that ain't happening anytime soon...

Spooky

That brings up a question regarding the PKM that Military Gun Supply is coming out with in October; is the issue regarding the Hajis PKM breakage mentioned by J-L going to be a quality issue with Military Gun Supply's semi-auto PKM?  Or were the PKM's break down just due to usage and poor maintenance?

This raises a question in my mind due to fact the PKM going for sale at Military Gun Supply is going to cost around $5000.00. And if there are quality issues with fielded units, will their be problems with these units.

Not trying to stir up a problem, just want to make sure if I buy this rifle, at that cost, that I'm getting a top of the line/quality weapon.

I don't know if that's the actual price or not but if so I wouldn't waste my money on one.  For that price you can get a semi auto HK-21 and eventually drop a sear pack into it to have a MG...not just a big heavy AK.  Just my thoughts.  Worth $2500 max to me...

cms81586; do you have any pics of the HK-21?  Didn't catch your response prior to putting my new topic out there.  But, yes, their price on their website it 4995.00.
