I have been looking at kits lately to scratch that itch that i have for an ak. I have noticed that a great deal of them say that they have "dark bores". What exactly does this mean? Are the barrels shot out and need to be replaced immediately? thanks
Dark bore = rust and pitting. The Yugos are the only current AK kits without chrome lined bores. Romanian, Polish, Bulgarian, Hungarian = chrome lined. There are plenty of dark bores out there that shoot just fine. It all depends on how bad it is rusted/pitted.
You will see the "dark bore" description on many of the Yugo kits as the bores are not chrome lined and corrosive ammunition was used in them. Those kits are a crap shoot as to whether you will receive a usable barrel or not. Many of the Yugo kits are usable but very ugly when you look down the bore. There are not any new replacement barrels on the market for the Yugos yet, and its unknown if there ever will be. If you can find a Yugo with a very good or better bore they are worth the extra cost. To my knowledge all other kits on the market today are chrome lined. I've bought many different kits, with the exception of the Yugo's all have had great barrels. I have managed to find two Yugo's with very good bores but it took a little luck and alot of net surfing. For someone new to building its hard to beat a matching number Romainian for around $100.00 IMHO.
