Is it normal for the gas to hit you in the face when shooting an AK left handed??  I've never had a problem with any other semi auto I've shot, but I bought a WASR a few weeks ago and the gas blows straight in to my face after every shot.  Is this common with the AK platform and if can anyone give me some ideas as to how to fix it??

I'm a lefty and shoot Chinese, Bulgarian, Yugoslavian and Polish AKs. Never had that issue.

Any idea what would cause it??  Which way should the excess gas go other than out the barrel??

A bad seal around the piston?

Perhaps gas is some how getting around the piston and dumping out the back of the gas tube?

Are your gas tube vents fouled, and forcing gas back at you?

I don't know if this is possible, I'm just taking a stab.

I shoot rifles lefty and don't have any REAL issues with any of my AK's. Though I do occasionally get a little burning powder blowback in the eye if I'm not wearing glasses, but that's really about it.
Just a good reminder that you should always be wearing glasses when shooting.

The piston has a fair amount of play inside the gas tube, but I thought its supposed to.  The gas tube does have a ton of buildup.  When your saying gas tube vents, are you talking about the holes in the gas block?

All AKs blow some gas out of the rear sight block. That's why there is fouling inside the block after the rifle is fired. There is no "seal" between the piston and the block and the piston is considerably smaller than the ID of the piston tube, which allows gas and powder residue to flow past the piston.
That being said, I shoot off the left shoulder and have never had a problem with gas or powder residue hitting my face.
Make sure the vents in the gas block are clear. Try a different brand of ammunition.

I shoot lefty and have never had a problem with that.

DO NOT shoot a suppressed AR like that.

The vents are clear.  I've shot 3 or 4 brands of ammo out of it but I have no idea if its a particular brand doing it or if one is worse than another.

The first couple times I shot it I had glasses and never noticed.  The last time I shot it I didn't have glasses with me and after a few rounds my eyes were burning and I realized what was happening but can't figure out why.

The gun functions fine and most of the time I wear glasses when shooting so its not a huge deal, but at the same time I'd like to figure out whats causing it since its obviously not normal and if it can be fixed.

gas port on bbl out of spec and allowing more gas into tube?

That's a possibility.
A simple test is to insert a bit into the port. It should accept a 9/64" bit and should not accept a 5/32" bit.

I've been pretty busy this month so I just got around to checking this and a 5/32" did not fit.
