I just recently purchased a Century Yugo (M70AB2) and would like to replace the hand guard plastic with something better. I see replacement kits for all other types of AK but this one. Can anyone recommend a site with the parts I am looking for....Thanks in advance for any assistance.. |

My M70AB2 also came with the plastic handguards. I ordered these original Yugo guards through CenterFire Systems several weeks ago fore $14.99 each. These needed a lot of refinishing, but came out alright. CenterFire's gone up in price on the handguards since I ordered mine. The only other alternatives I've seen are the custom made sets which are too pricey for me. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v498/tditmore/akakrt.jpg |
| I also got my Yugo underfolder wood from Centerfire and was very pleasantly surprised at how good the wood looked upon receipt. It cleaned up beautifully and looks great on my Yugo. I was very skeptical about ordering Centerfire's Yugo wood but am very pleased with the outcome. |

I had to clean a bit of the cosmolene off and then give them a good sanding to get the dents, scratches and carvings out. They looked pretty rough in the beginning, but they were solid with no cracks or other defects. They feel good to me and I like them much better than the plastic. Now, the ones made by Ironwood(?) are much better quality and look fantastic, but these really serve my purposes just fine. In all honesty, I think the Yugo wood from CFS is hit or miss. You might give them a call and see if they'll pick you out a couple of nice pieces. azimuth |

I really appropriate all the good information and recommendations... I will check both places tomorrow - thinking about refinishing the weapon also... I am really happy with the platform, I was building a AR-15 - but the upper was going to take 10 -12 Weeks and cost 460. I was able to pick this up for 430.00 and can slowly modify a fully functional weapon. This site is awesome for ideas and help. |
Ditto on that......I'll buy a pair from anybody as well. John |

Thanks, Brazos...here is the process I used on the handguards. I removed the wood from the metal and wiped off as much cosmolene as I could with some shop towels. I then used some 60 grit paper wrapped around a 1x4 and sanded until all the initials, bumps and scratches were gone. I then applied some Minwax Red Mahogany stain until it was the color I wanted. After that, I applied several coats of boiled linseed oil hand-rubbed into the guards, which did in fact darken the wood and bring out the grain. Finally, added a coat of neutral kiwi shoe polish to add a dull sheen and seal the wood. Just make sure you allow the guards to dry thoroughly between each step. azimuth |

I got my handguard set in from Centerfire and I think they look very, very good. Much better than I was expecting... Make sure you ask politely for them to hand select them. They charged me an extra $2 but it was worth it. I'll post pics when I can. Anyone have any idea how to get this cosmo off the wood? Also, I need a source for info on removing the upper hand guard from the gas tube...it's on pretty tight...I dont want to ruin this wood trying to get it off. B Update: Found my answers here. |
