I am getting ready to start my first build and have been doing a bunch of research on this site. I think I am set on what to do, but wanted to run it by some of you to make sure. I plan on buying 3 kits, (2) Romanian AKM and (1) Polish Underfolder. I am going to get the excellent condition kits with matching numbers. The end result will be (1) Romanian AKM with stock furniture, (1) Romanian AKM with metal side folding stock and synthetic hand guard, and (1) Polish Underfolder with the correct stock furniture. I plan on building them in that order so I can do the easiest one first. As far as tools, I plan on picking up a shop press and drill press from Harbor Freight. I have been looking for an excuse to buy both anyways. I plan on using rivets to assemble the kits. For receivers, I am thinking OOW since they are located 1/2 hour from my house. I can pick them up there to avoid shipping charges and FFL fees. I plan on using Tapco G2 FCGs on all 3. The additional compliance parts will be: Romanian AKM stock furniture - gas port & muzzle break Romanian Side Folder - pistol grip, & synthetic handguard Polish Underfolder - gas port, muzzle break For finished, I plan on using Duracoat, but I plan on test firing the rifle before finishing. Since the OOW receivers are in white, is there anything I need to apply before the Duracoat? For assembly, is there any modifications I need to make, other than adding the compliance parts? I thought I read somewhere about grinding a couple notches off the bolt, but cannot find that again. I definitely plan on headspacing all of them but hopefully, that won't be an issue with matching number kits. I do have a Century Arms AK47 in my collection, so I can use that as a guide for assembly. Thanks for your time, hopefully, I am not asking stupid questions. I have found alot of information, but didn't see any in depth stuff on the actually building. I want to make sure I am doing this right since this is my first gun build. Joe |

sounds like youre all set! There is not much else to do but get to it. get the drill press! and a good vice, a press is nice but may not be necessary, i havent used one in my 4 builds so far. Once you start taking the kits apart, all your research and knowledge will come into play as you suddenly remember other peoples posted experiences and pictures. Grind down and pop the rivets out, press pin and barrel, remove more rivets. ...slap it all back together with the US crap. happy building |
