I have an I.O., Inc. STG-2003-C which is essentially a .223 Romanian AK that was modified by I.O., Inc. once it came into the country to accept double stack magazines.  I have the Weiger Steel 30rd magazines.  When I charge the rifle, it fires and fails to extract the first round and then as the bolt carrier is returning forward it starts trying to feed the second round only to be jammed against the one that did not extract.  The second round's case is bent during this process.  I have to hold the bolt carrier to the rear as I remove the magazine.  If I allow the bolt carrier and bolt to close without the magazine and then pull back on the charging handle, the empty case will now extract.  The problem repeats if I put the magazine back in and try to run the firearm with the remaining rounds.  It does the same thing with different magzines.    Can someone give me some ideas of where to start to fix this problem.

Thanks

Strip the bolt to clean and inspect the parts.

Manual here: http://www.box.net/shared/cu2djae1zb

I suspect your extractor is either too filthy to grab the case rim or it (or the extractor axle) is broken.

I'm going to take the bolt apart and clean it completely and then try it again later this week.  I compared the extractor of the 223 romanian to an extractor of a bulgarian ak74.  I immediately noticed that the spring in the bulgarian ak74 is much more stiff compared to the 223 romanian ak.  I can't even seem to compress the ak74 spring, but the 223 romanian spring is easily compressed.  Should the 223 spring be this much different than an ak74 spring?

Try swapping the stiffer spring into the .223 rifle.

A crap spring could cause the symptom you're seeing.

Well, I guess I need to get another punch in order to disassemble my bolt.  I'm going to trying the cleaning and if that fails, then try the spring swap with my ak74.  I want to try one thing at a time just to be sure of what exactly fixed the problem.  I'll post the info as soon as I get a chance to shoot this week.

There should be a pin punch in the standard AK tools.

Did you break a punch and are you following the directions in the manual?

I didn't break a punch, just don't have one small enough to get the pin out, but you did give me a good idea to check the tool kit that came with my WASR10.  This I.O., Inc. did not come with a kit as the gun was used and missing a tool kit.

Well, I was able to find a punch the right size in the tool kit that came with my WASR 10, thanks for the heads up.  I never took an AK bolt apart and never realized the punches are the same for the 223 and 7.62x39 rifles.  I took it apart and gave it a good cleaning and lube.  I compared my bolt to a friends Romanian 223 AK and found that the extractor springs seem to be the same and the gun being compared with shoots fine.  I'm going to try taking the firing pin out and cycle the system through several rounds to see if it still has problems before I take it to the range.  I figure that by taking out the firing pin I won't have to worry about an accidental discharge at the house.

I cycled the gun through several rounds manually after the cleaning and didn't have any extraction problem, but the proof will be at the range.  I'll post an update then.  Thanks for all the help.

First let me say sorry for such a long delay in posting a reply with a range report.  I'm going through a divorce so I'll leave it at that.  Now getting back on topic, I finally got to the range and tested the gun after cleaning.  I fired about 4 rounds without problems, then the failure to extract the spent casings started again.  I later purchased a new extractor spring from K-VAR.  After receiving and installing the new spring, I went back out to the range and the gun went through 30 rounds without any problems.  Only time will tell if that was the final fix, but I have high hopes.  Thanks so much for all the help that I have received on this forum.  I've learned a lot from many of you and hope to learn more in the future.  It feels good to be able to fix your own firearms.
