Bit off topic but here it goes.My late Uncle was in a RAF maintenance unit and was posted to a Polish Spitfire squadron based on the outskirts of London during WW2.He remembered that one particular morning was very foggy and all aircraft were grounded but a German Heinkel was heard circling overhead.Two Poles ran to their Spits and proceeded to taxi and take off in the fog despite it being almost impossible to see.Soon after the burst of heavy mg fire could be heard and the Heinkel came down near the perimeter of the base, the two Spits landed and the two Polish pilots went for a cup of tea as if nothing had happened!.I always remember my Uncle saying that whereas RAF pilots shot down enemy 'aircraft' the Poles shot down 'Germans', quite often shooting pilots and crew that had bailed out and were on parachutes. |
