| If you guys were to only by one short barreled AK would it be a 9mm or a .762? Is the cost of ammo for .762 worth it for the extra power or is .762 a waste in a barrel this short? I want a short barreled AK but I have an mp5 clone already so I was thinking of going .762. |

Is there ever going to be a time where you run to the gun safe and say “For this danger I’m about to face, I need 9mm in a carbine format and I’m going to need what the AK platform brings rather than the MP5”? If the answer is “yes”, then you made a mistake buying the clone, right? If the answer is “no”, then get a 7.62. It’s a fun gun. So don't over think it. It’s an historic design and just plan fun to own and shoot. That’s why you get one. For the variety. And the caliber is part that equation. If you can’t afford buying some 7.62 to feed it, then can you even afford a second, utterly redundant 9mm PCC in your collection t begin with? I’m not anti-anything-but-7.62-AK’s. But trying to inject something “sensible” into what is completely a fun/want (versus need) situation will inevitably just result in less enjoyment due to the compromise. |

However there is a trade-off with recoil A 7.62 Krink-sized pistol will jump a bit more than the same size in 223. Krink 8 inch ballistics show that a 7.62 krink has as much energy at 100yds as a 55gr 223 at 100 from 8" at muzzle! To me its a big difference - but if your only plinking this may not matter to you. There is a lot of 7.62 ammo being made out there - not just Russia some day the prices will come down again. I think the best balance is an AK104 or if shorter the Yugo M92. I built a virgin M92 kit with a new never assembled 2005 kit - It is the best grouping AK I have within 100yds. I have no idea why but its great for groups. It's big enough it is controllable, but not big - It is heavy and could be used as a club itself. I am currently considering an 8" Riley kit build into a Krink just for fun, but the price of kits is the same as assembled guns??? |

After spending a day on the range working around and shooting through and into cars 7.62x39 in an 8" barrel far out performs 9mm in a 10". |

I got both pretty cheaply on Gunbroker during the 'brace ban' as they became less desirable without a brace option. If you are going to get an AK pistol/SBR, get it in 7.62x39mm (between 7.62 & 9mm). Particularly if you already have a 9mm MP5 clone. Take a look at either the Draco, Yugo PAP, Galil or SAM-7 pistols and decide your budget. I would get an import vs. a PSA/US made guns as they can be cut off at anytime and are always seen as more desirable. But PSA does have a good warranty and will back up their goods. As mentioned, 7.62x39mm does well out of a shorter barrel than 5.56. Ammo is readily available, although more expensive than in the past (but what isn't). PSA has just started offering steel case ammo, so that should help keep it competitive. I have always been a fan of the 7.62x39mm cartridge, especially in the past when it was dirt cheap. I started on the Chinese stuff and worked my way through the European imports as well. I have had Chinese tracer ammo that was fun to shoot in the evening. I regrettably didn't get the Tula subsonic ammo when it was coming in. I currently have several AKs in 7.62x39mm along with a PSA KS-47 and PTR32P. |

The price on the draco is good but its stripped down. I will probably look at the psa or other options but I am going with .762. |

I got to shoot a friends PSA AK-P and it was fine -Close to Krink looks but More DRACO sized front end but that allows more front and accesorizing if that is your thing as the AK-P takes std AK handguards. It shot fine, worked well and has a tip-up Krink style railed top cover for a red dot. I have a PSA AK-104 (now SBR'd) its been flawless. I think PSA makes a decent 7.62 AK I have a Draco too and that is also a reliable gun. |
