Hello..im new to this website and im any firearms expert can educate me on this critical information...
I’m trying to get a realistic understanding of how M855 would performs  from m16a1 at around 180 meters (196yard) in terms of penetration and bullet condition after impact.

For a hit to the upper torso at rib level that distance, how common are these outcomes?

-pass-through, bullet completely intact

-Pass-through , bullet  deformation

-bullet stays inside+ deformation

-Bullet stays inside+ bullet in near-perfect shape (how realistic is this?)

I’m not looking for graphic descriptions — just the ballistic side:
impact velocity, bullet stability, rib interaction, and behavior below the fragmentation threshold..

5.56 is a “mouse gun”.

When discussing bullet performance on humans the speculation and importance of various bullets gets very complicated when looking at standard pistol rounds.

When looking at sub 200 yards with most any rifle caliber pretty much any solid hit in the chest is just lights out , why bother looking at the shape of the bullet?

Yeah I understand a bullet that passes through carries some energy with it while a bullet that stays put dumps 100% of its energy the result is most times the same.

Thank you for  explanation. Yes I agree it gonna be deadly regardless of caliber.

My interest isn’t about terminal effectiveness for self-defense — it’s specifically about forensic interpretation. In some real-world cases investigators argue over whether a bullet was a clean pass-through, fragmented, yawed, or deformed after upper torso impact.

my question is more about the expected bullet condition at ~180 yards (M855 vs M193, or other 5.56 projectiles) after passing through ribs. I’m trying to understand what is “normal” vs what would be unusual in a forensic exam.*

What about bullet condition? I’m asking from an investigation/forensic point of view.
I hope i receive your opinion

A lot of variables depending on what’s hit. There isn’t really a standard. Bullets do weird stuff sometimes. I’ve seen dudes soak up 8-10 bullets and still be scrolling on their phone in the ER.
