Has anyone done a rimfire known distance with just iron sights? I’m looking a signing up for one and I have a few rifles capable that are scoped but I’m on an iron sight kick lately. |

Rimfire KD has been done with irons. It was a goal the shooter had set for himself and took quite an effort to prepare for. Iron sights typically don't have enough vertical adjustment for 200 yards. He did a writeup AAR on the Appleseed forum. If I can find it I'll link it here |

Although I did go ahead and order a vortex venom 3-15, that I’m pretty confident I’ll be using. |

If I can find it I'll link it here There used to be special match rifle front sight bases with dual heights where you would move your front sight to the lower level for the longer distance because the Redfield type rear sights lacked the elevation and your head would get further off the stock if it did. |
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

That is an interesting concept. Never saw a front sight like that but it would work pretty well. |

Thanks to NvrBrdWes for digging this thread out of the now gone Project Appleseed sub forum! Just thought I would update it after the event. Unfortunately, weather messed the range up last weekend and the event had to be dropped back to a 100 yard event. I shot the 1st day with a scope (vortex Venom 3-15 FFP) and scored a 43 out of 50. That evening I decided I wanted to challenge myself by shooting with irons the next day. So after I cleaned my rifle I put the carrying handle and rail mounted front site back on. Sunday I scored a 38, 40, and 39 on the three AQT's we shot. I was excited I qualified with Irons and now I've decided to never go back to a scope. Well not until my eyes force me anyway. One thing that really caught me off guard and I would have never considered was the change in my dope moving from optics back to irons. With the scope I had a total of 7 MOA drop from 25 yards to 100, with irons it was 10.5 MOA. Same ammo, same everything just swapped from the scope to the iron sights. The instructor, another shooter, and myself could only figure it was a height over bore and or position of the focal plant difference. Overall I had a great time and look forward to the next time I can make it out to shoot. I am still going to keep working on a way to use the irons at 200! |

I wonder if your iron MOA adjustments are like 1/3 MOA or something like that instead of 1/4 adjustments (or whatever your scope is). If the adjustment MOA value is different that could be whats throwing your math off. Just spitballing. |
Watching the kids shoot Pieeater's 1919 was great. Nothing warms the heart more than seeing a little kid kneeling in a pile of brass and links.-Pthfndr after the Nov 13th NorCal shoot
