| Hey guys, i'm pretty new to long range shooting. I've got lots of practice at 100 yards but am just now branching out from 0-700 yards. I am shooting a DPMS LR-308 w/ a vortex viper PST 6-24 scope that is capable of .75 MOA @ 100yds and i'm looking for some drills to help me perfect and get comfortable out to those distances. I have access to a 200yd range all the time and a 700yd range once every 2 to 3 weeks so if I could get drills for all distances that would be great! |

First thing you need to do is "prove" your rifle at distances and make up a "dope card" for your rifle and what you shoot through it. Lets say you zero it at 100 yards, and you can cold bore shoot it at 100 right on the money: Then check and record your scope elevation adjustments at different ranges, But don't forget to reset the scope elevation back to your 100yd zero or it will be screwed up. Example: 100 = zero 200 = lets say 6 clicks up elevation puts you on target, record it ....return scope to 100 yd zero....move to 300 yards 300 = lets say now 13 clicks up elevation is needed, record it......return scope to 100 yard zero....move to 400 yards 400 = now it is lets say 22 clicks up elevation to put you on target.......record it, return scope to your 100 yd zero......move to 500.........and so on.......out to 700 yds ...you may also want to do 50 yard recordings at 550, 600, 650, 700..............and so on...until you have you adjustments recorded from your BZO, that is the easy part and only part of the battle. ......doping the wind comes with experience, but there are tricks to the trade, and basic formulas for adjustments for "doping" the wind. -CP |

I'll choose a time, distance, target size, shooting position, and rifle to shoot on the next day. Then whatever the conditions at that time, I take one shot and must hit the target.
Sure you can shoot more after, but the first shot is the one that counts. Sometimes use a fouled bore, sometimes clean. If you have a spotter or are good at reacquiring your target, be ready with a follow-up shot in case you miss. If it is a short distance you can always use a small target. 260 Prone Just plan on a first shot hit every time you go to the range. Then don't miss; if you do, learn from it. |

Appleseed has a bunch of great drills. You can start on their scaled 25 yard targets or replicate the stages at appropriate distances with full size targets.
I also shoot the Army ALT-C
