A fantastic read. I know that he wanted to keep it short, but he is a good writer and given the chance I would encourage him to tell the "long" story. Many would take the time to read no matter how long it got.
Thank you for posting that here. |

We got our plates issued to us in Kuwait a few weeks before moving North (this is Feb 2004). No time to consider how much of a game changer plates are. As far as I know the training doctrine has changed and Marines are taught to square off to their targets. However, if you rewind the clock back to at least 1999 when I was taught in urban fighting it was imparitive to shoot and move, when you move your body will be square to your target to aid in creating a stable shooting platform. Thankfully I had a squad leader that had been in FAST Company before going into the Reserves. He drilled us a lot with mag changes and stowing empty mags in your cargo pocket. |

I've been doing standard, tactical, and one-handed reload drills with my pistols for months now. This is a good kick-in-the-pants to start doing drills with the rifle too.

Thank you for sharing. Great story from a heck of a great man. I wish him well in everything he does, but he looks like he can do anything he likes.
If you can, tell him thank you for sharing his story with us. My vote for best thread on here in a long time. |

The military training in the old days was even worse. My friend was in the Marines in the late 70's and they never learned anything valuable. The only firing on the move they ever did was from the hip(if you can believe that) and they never practiced reloading etc. They also wanted him to use as little lube as possible(they were scared of lubing the bolt like Pat Rogers always talks about). He drove a amphibious tractor that had a .50 machine gun on it and he said they fired it 2 times in the entire time he was in. They only fired a few times per year and only was given 1 single 30 round mag to fire full auto(from the hip) per 6th months.

Excellent read & great advice. Woke me up as I am one who always practiced pistol mag changes, never rifle. I just tried to do my AK mag change quick. Terrible. Dangerously terrible. I will practice.
Thank you for the post & God Bless that young Marine. |

Outstanding post. I think today we take for granted many of the TTPs that came about in response to OIF/OEF. This young man is obviously still a warrior.

Man, where were his fellow Marines?
Nobody was close enough to cover him while he did his reload or were their attentions turned else where? He sounds like one hell of a good Marine. I hope the doctors and scientists out there can get him back into the fight someday someway. I'll pray for that, because this country needs men like him now more than ever. God Bless him. My children sleep free because of him. |

This is a great post. I went throught most of my fromal LEO rifle training with my agency back in 03 and we did cover most of what the poster said that he did not get and did so to the pont of bloody fingers. To this day guys bitch durng our training about doing malfunction drills and reloads. I will print this post and save it for our next range sesion. One other thing that I would like to add as a manditory training issue. Not sure if the Marine had a side arm, but at those distances transitioning to a side arm is another option and needs to be practiced. Shooting on the move is also a huge issue in urban combat and with out an optic its darn hard to be accurate.
Based on the pics he posted he looks like young man. So long as our gov does not screw up or medical system to bad, new advances will catch up to him and he will be on his feet again. |

Is that one of those expensive ass inconel short production run flash hiders?
I need to take another pistol class. I'd love to take a carbine class, but it'd be a very expensive endeavor and I just don't have the money to do that right now.

Or at least easier to gain approval. Some of the best training I have had....didn't come from military instructors. |

Simply amazing reading.
I was always told that rifle training was pretty much dictated by the match shooter mafia of the Marine Corps. Maybe that's changed now. |
