| we'll, I've been out of BJJ for about 5 years due to school, life and another shoulder surgery. School is done, kids are older, everything is back to normal and my favorite near-by gym just reopened. I'm going to start back at 1 day a week, will keep you updated :) |

Congrats on the Purple! I've been blue for about 1.25yrs now and I'm changing schools next week. It will allow me to progress quicker and have more training partners to help round out my weaker areas. I'll also be starting Judo, as my new academy offers that as well. |

I train under 2 X World Champ 5X Brazilian national champ Aparecido "Bill" Faria in Mandarin. It's a smaller school. Mostly hobbyists and law enforcement guys. I love it there. Great culture and Professor Bill's style is well suited to my game. |

Anyone else noticing an uptick in schools offering open mats to non-members recently? Perhaps it was mostly due to COVID nonsense, back in 2021/22 I contacted a bunch of local schools and only a couple had open mats for non-members. Now, almost all of them do. My New Year's resolution is to hit up a different school's open mat at least once a month. |

My New Year's resolution is to hit up a different school's open mat at least once a month. While I was in NYC this summer I trained at a different gym and it really elevated my game because of all the different looks I was getting. It was great training at a predominantly guard passing school since my instructor is a world class guard player. I have, as a result developed a guard-playing game. Training in the other school really leveled up my guard passing and tested my guard. Especially my lasso and open guard. There are a bunch of good schools nearby me and I have a similar goal of doing more cross training. I really like the fellowship aspect too. Meeting other practitioners is always great. |

Well I’m registered for the Arnold again this year. Maybe this time I’ll not get injured lol My goal is 4 comps this year, injury and schedule permitting. Win or lose, I need to compete more. I also cross train. Mostly at 10th Planet, because I have had awesome luck with the people there, but crosstraining is the best. |

I've been doing a lot of cross training. In the past couple of months, I've trained with BJJ Cop, Nicholas Meregali, and Chewjitsu. Been doing training with other gyms around town to promote Tap Cancer Out as well. I really enjoy cross training. I was hoping to compete last month but injuries kept me from doing so. I'm hoping to go into my fort purple belt bracket at the end of the year. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Who was your favorite to train with? A few buddies of mine are contemplating going down to a Chewjitsu camp since it's only in KY. My year has been hectic! I haven't competed, I haven't gotten to cross train either. Mostly due to life with a newborn. I'll be testing for my Judo yellow belt next week I believe. That's my main focus right now. I'm finding my standup improving some due to it, but those pesky wrestlers are my nightmare lol |

Very cool. I volunteered at the TCO Atlanta Open the year before last. It was a great event. Atlanta always brings the heat. You guys should come down to Jacksonville next year. I'd be happy to host you at our acadamy for some mat time, and if time permits maybe a quick range trip. |

I had looked at this smooth version previously. https://dollamur.com/flexi-connectr-home-martial-arts-mat-10x10-smooth.html |

I haven’t watched all of day 1 yet, but I was disappointed in Rockhold’s performance. It looked like he just showed up for the $10,001 to be there. Maybe he was just lending his name to the competition, because it sure didn’t look like he was trying to win his match. |

@BrowardMason That's awesome!! I've only been doing Jits for about 16 months, but I really enjoy it. I got a late start at it (I'm 52 now). I have zero desire to compete, but I enjoy watching the comps. I haven't watched a lot of competitions, but I really like the angled walls of the CJI - it keeps it moving instead of going out of bounds. I'm hoping Craig Jones does it again next year. |

We’ve got 2 guys on their mid 60’s I train with. Both are athletes and big. I like seeing older dudes out there. Seeing one of sister gyms grey headed purple belts in a competition sealed the deal for me. I signed up shortly after. I’m a three 3 stripe purple now @ 56, started at 48 y/o. I train under Kurt Holobough with Gracie United South Team Jucao. . |

Bump. This thread needs more attention. I'm sure more people on here train than the few who post. I'm down to only 3.5-5hrs a week (2-3 classes) sadly. My baby is at a stage where any perceived violence is scary, so she gets scared when I take her. I hate training so little, but I don't mind "missing" class to be with my baby girl. |
|
I've still been three days a week. I attended a local tournement last month that six or seven people from my gym competed in. It was fun to watch and help out. One girl (about 23 years old, and about 8 months training) lost her first match pretty quickly, won her second match, and was so nervous about her third she almost didn't go out on the mat. It was good to be there to pump her up and get her confidence up to go out on the mat. She ended up winning by points. Which made me want to enter a local tournement in June. So, starting today, I'll add a 4th day of training to my week. One of the purple belts with a wrestling background is teaching a wrestling/stand up jiu jitsu class on Sundays. And honestly, this is where I'm the weakest. |
|
My son started training again. It's awesome to have him back. He competed last weekend and took home a silver medal. I'm looking forward to a retreat in April where we'll be training for 4 days with Bernardo Faria. Attached File |

We've got a few families at my gym that train. Seems like a great hobby to spend time with the family. I'm sure the retreat will be awesome. Faria seems like a genuinely nice guy from his videos. |

We kicked off our first day of training at TCOasis with Bernardo Faria this morning. He tought us his over/under pass and variations. Faria is an awesome dude and was great with the kids. He did a 30 minute early session with them and they had a ton of fun. My son even got to be uké. Attached File Attached File |

And honestly, this is where I'm the weakest. I know it was a small, local tournement, but I'm, glad I did it. I was the only one who signed up in my division (Masters 50, blue belt, 195 pound), so there were no matches scheduled for me when I got there. The organizers policy is to move you up in weight, down in age, or work with you to get you a match. They offered me a match against a 225 lb white belt. I told them I'd prefer to go in the bracket that would give me the most matches. Turned out, that was just the adult blue belt, 195 pound. I lost the first match to a 23 year old by armbar in about a minute. I made a mistake and he capitalized on it. I lost the second match to another 23 year old, but it took him all six minutes to beat me by points. I was never in danger of any submissions, but I had a kimura that I turned into a sweep, and I was pretty close to a guillotine from closed guard when the match ended. I had three things I was fearful of before the tournement. 1. Getting injured. 2. Embarrassing myself by not doing as well as I am capable of. 3. Losing and being pissed off and being a bad sportsman about it. None of those things happened. I got on the mat and went against two dudes less than half my age. I didn't win either match, they were both better than me, but I held my own. I'm so fucking glad I did the tournement. Any older dudes out there thinking about trying out a BJJ class, go do it. |

I am pretty stoked got my purple belt last week, been kinda busy and havent posted it yet. Super stoked though that I have finally made it.Attached File |

I am working out of town for a few months, and unlike when I am home, I have my evenings free. I found a local gym, $250 for 3 mths, perfect. My training has been extremely spotty as depicted by my training graph. Blue lines are training, orange are promotions. I am a 4 stripe blue belt, but I think my professor lost track and gave me my fourth stripe too soon. Attached File |
