I think one of the key points being alluded to is that having ONE way and only ONE way to do things is not optimal. Different situations required different methods.

Per John Boyd in Patterns of Conflict, success relates to:

-Variety – adaptive, unpredictable
-Rapidity – operate inside opponent’s OODA loop
-Harmony – unity
-Initiative

Predictability is dangerous.
