I'm trying to find an introductory pistol class for a few preteens, but every Appleseed section I've looked at said that it's no open to people under 18. Is that an Appleseed rule or something specific to the states I was looking at (CO, KS, SD)? Assuming that I won't be able to get the spawn and offspring into an Appleseed course, is there something else similar? |

| Laws regarding underage persons and pistols are nefariously written at best. Vague and problematic and lend to wildly perception based narratives. It’s safer for paying customers and training outfits to not engage in that type of training. It’s a shame but most use long gun courses for youth to teach basic skills and safety. I’m no expert here so take it with a pound of salt, just my perception. Maybe I’m off. |

IIRC in the 1770s the British were amazed at how so many American children were proficient with firearms. That is always an issue for those who would steal our freedom. While NRA basic shotgun and basic rifle are commonly taught to the young, I was discouraged from teaching basic pistol to under 18. Of course if the parents are present and all the forms are signed the main issue is just keeping the kids attention. When I certified as a NRA Personal Protection instructor I was told not to teach NRA Personal Protection (Handgun) anyone under 21. A recent court decision in Texas made state License to Carry a reality for those 18-to-21. So I have no issues teaching the State course or my own defensive pistol training courses to those under 21. |
