How far are .224" 53 gr. HP MatchKings still accurate?
I have shot these at reduced 100 yard highpower matches for years with great success. When should I look to go to a 69 or 77smk in yardage? |

Just depends on whether you can handle the wind. I would shoot them to 200 yards. I shoot 52 grain MK's instead, and do shoot them to 200 yards.

300 is definitely the furthest I’ve heard of anyone shooting them in matches.

They’ll be as accurate you please as long as it’s not windy.
They have the advantage of less dwell time in the barrel which is nice for standing @200. Makes your follow through less sensitive. I know guys who shoot them at 200 for that reason. I used to shoot 69s at 200, 77s at 300, and 80s at 600 but decided it wasn’t worth all the effort to have 3 loads. Now I just use 77s for everything besides 600. It’s nice having one load I can use for almost everything. |

You can get away with them at 200 easy enough. At 300, there will be days when the wind will make you wish you were shooting 77s.
In terms of a 5 MPH full value cross wind at 300, you are close to 2.17 MOA with the Berger 52 @ 3100, and 1.26 MOA with a 75 @ 2750. By itself, that doesn't cause an issue if you compensate for the windage, it becomes a matter of margin for your error. If you miss a wind call, that can make the difference between putting many in the 9 ring versus just getting fewer Xs. You should run some tests on a windy day at 300 just for the experience. That would show you why you hear this advice so often. |
