Ok, so I have decided to step into the long range world, which is probably a mistake because I hear that it can empty your bank pretty easy.
So heres the question, I have three rifles, one of these rifles I would like to turn into a long range weapon. Now my version of long range and your version are probably pretty different. I would like to shoot 5 to 8 inch groups at 500 yards. So the three rifles are, a rem model 700 .308 w/ 20inch standard barrel, a RRA LAR-8 .308 w/ 16inch barrel, and a M1A NM w/ 22 inch barrel ( just got her yesterday) So i know you guys know a lot more than I do so I am putting it out there to see what you guys think. I am going to spend 500 in one of these rifles but i dont know which. I have read so many things that I just dont know anymore. They say you need a bull barrel on the 700, they say a 16 inch barrel on the RRA is not long enough, they say the M1A is very expense to get accurate... So guys which do you think should get the makeover I would like to be able to shoot out to 700 yards but where I am in Ky it is just not logical to need a weapon that will shoot that far. Anyone of those rifles will be fine for shooting at 500 yards. Spend your money on some decent ammo and shoot the things. Try some of the 155, 168, or 175 grain loads here: http://www.southwestammunition.com/category_s/75.htm
While I love M1A's, they do take a lot of work to get to shoot well. My guess is that your Rem or RRA will hold a 1.5 MOA group in stock form. Therefore, with practice, you should be able to get groups under 8" at 500 yards. IMHO, you're better off waiting to do any upgrades until you get a good amount of experience. | I would glass bed the Remington 700, have it recrowned, get a good set of mounts and bases, and a good optic and it will be a good shooting rifle and 8" groups will be no problem at 500 and could prolly easily do better. If the trigger can be adjust turn it down to around 2 pounds and save money for an aftermarket. |
| Pretty much agree with the above. A $500 budget will be tight, but get a decent mount (EGW?), rings (Tactical Precision TSR or similar) and the best optic you can afford. The stock Remington trigger can be adjusted to work just fine. The pillar bedding job would ba a nice to have, but you'd be better off spennding the money on better glass to begin with. You can always pillar bed, replace the barrel or replace the trigger later if you decide you need more accuracy. This path should easily meet your requirement of 5-8" @ 500 yds however. |
