So this rifle is now in my stable, but I'm going to replace the old glass on it. It won't be my deer rifle, and it's already heavy so something lightweight is fairly irrelevant. It shoots quite well, and I'd like to have it set up for 300m or more with decent magnification. I haven't done precision optics in many years, and have mostly old Leupold and Burris on those guns. Most of my others have Trijicon optics on them. What's a current solid optic to consider for a semi-precision use bolt gun? Leupold? Nightforce? Some of the Trijicon scopes other than ACOGs? Thanks! |

The question is, what are you going to use it for, if not deer hunting? Sounds like you have other guns. My philosophy on inherited guns is to leave them as the original owner had them. Shoot them occasionally for fun, but be good to them. Unless you really need a heavy 30-06 to use, it sounds to me like you should save the expensive glass for a more used rifle. |

If you are going to be serious trophy hunting then i would upgrade. |

On your other post I suggested Kahles or Swarovski mid-powered scopes. They have world-class optics and are Austrian, like your rifle. Now that I know you are not wanting to use the rifle for hunting, both companies also make scopes with ranging or precision reticles and exposed turrets. My best hunting rifle has a Leupold VX6-HD scope, pictured below. 2-12x42 with Firedot Duplex. That hunting reticle might not be the best for your purposes. Leupold has a TMR reticle that might be better, also available in a 3-18 model. The glass on this scope is up there with Kahles, Swaovski and top tier Zeiss scopes. The turrets track true. These are not inexpensive scopes. However, the Japanese-made Tasco is actually an excellent vintage scope. Maybe keep the rifle as-is for sentimental reasons if you are not going to shoot it much. Or you might look for used Leupold VX-2 or VX-3 in the power range and reticle you prefer, to be more period-correct.  |
