Scope Level Question

Finishing up my rifle build, and looking to add a scope level.

First question, is if I really need it. Will be shooting at paper at 100 yards (local range). Would love to shoot further, but will have to join a private club or travel out of state. Rifle in question is 6.8 SPC, with a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10.

Second, would be a recomendation please. Looking at the aluminum MKM level. Happy with their products and support in the past, and ive heard good things about them. Plus supporting a US company makes me happy.

Just curious if there's a better place to spend my money (if a level is actually needed in my case).

Since you’re asking in the precision rifle forum, yes you should have a level on the gun. Is it going to make any realistic difference at 100 yards? No. If you do ever intend to shoot farther it will become necessary and you should already be in the habit of ensuring the rifle is level before firing a shot. The MKM level is fine as are virtually any bubble level.

it's not a question of distance.

if you're shooting off a bench that's level, at a target frame that's level, and you hung your paper target level, no, you don't really need a level on your rifle. there's half a dozen ways you can tell if you're canted on a normal square range from a bench.

if you're shooting off sloped ground, at a target that's also on a slope, maybe the same or opposite direction, maybe up or down angle.... and especially if your head is leaning slightly onto the cheek rest, which means your ears are no longer telling you what the level horizon is, then it's quite easy to get a significant cant.

distance exacerbates it, but even at short distances, you can be off of a 'precision' target.

At 100 you don’t need it. Even at 1,000 it won’t benefit you without decent skills and rifle. Beyond 1,000 I use them. None of my 600 yd rifles have them.

I have the bubble level from Accuracy 1st.

I like Todd’s levels too. I only use levels that mount to the scope. Accuracy 1st levels are my preferred.

Give the laziest man the hardest job and he will find the easiest way to do it.
