When I lived in AZ I bought a new RPR in .243 when they first came out.  It was going to be my entry into learning better long range shooting skills and fun in the desert.  Long range shooting was practically out my back door.

Then I moved to SW Washington state.  This was before the place went full retard.

Either way, I have a practically untouched safe queen gen 1 RPR.  It's COMPLETELY impractical where I live.  Even when actively hunting I very rarely see myself shooting over 300 yards.  It's far more common to find sub 100 yard shots where I am.

So I'm trying to repurpose my large boat anchor...err...RPR.  It's 11lbs naked from the factory, stupidly nose heavy, and weighs even more with its scope.

I generally don't like selling firearms.  Especially nowadays.  Aside from that, I was thinking of making a much lighter rifle out of it.  Maybe take the barrel contour way down and chop it to 18"?  Lighten it up so that it's more fun to use/carry?  I'm ok with either keeping it at .243 or if I can find a decent price on a barrel, changing it out to another common caliber.  As much as I'd like to try one, dropping a grand on a proof research CF isn't an option for me.

Any ideas for something interesting?  I don't have any real goals or plans.  I just don't like safe queen firearms that aren't family relics.

I just bought a first gen RPR in 243. The salesman said it had been on the shelf since 2016. My plan is to replace the barrel with a 308 version.

In my case, I prefer the gun to be heavy, with a longer barrel as I only use it prone or on a bench.

That said, there is a series of YouTube videos by Catalyst arms where an RPR is lightened.
