So I mounted a big Leupold scope using a Leupold mount and headed out to the range to zero.

Set a target at 50yds, pulled the trigger and nothing.  Fired again.  Nothing.

Had my wife watch the berm for the splash, nothing.

Hung cardboard below my targets and fired,  Again nothing.  WTH?!

After a bit of research I came to realize the RPR has a 20MOA mount and the Leupold mount also has 20MOA.

So I put the crosshairs well into the dirt and hit just below the black circle on the target.  Since my primary range only goes out to 300yds I am going to switch the Ruger rail to a zero MOA which will suffice out to 600yds.

It does shoot nice though

Do all models have the 20 MOA built into the receiver? I had a little trouble zeroing my .223 RPR and wonder now if I did the same thing as you did.

I could not get mine on paper, the rail was way out of spec, ruger finally sent me a new one.

After measuring it with calipers, I understood why. It was milled very incorrectly, and as a bonus had a very left hook to it.

Had one come in the shop with the same issue. It was visibly crooked. Customer had same problem, would not get on paper.

I wasted a fair amount of 6.5 figuring that out, I had my Burris xtr 2(loaned from another gun) maxed out on windage and still had to hold 5 moa off just to touch paper.

Luckily I got a new rail and mounted my razor hd with no issue.

For this wondering, the sling is the cheap winchester like you would find at walmart. Also the scope rings are the type with the inserts, so I'm guessing 30mm/1inch compatible. I don't plan to use either.

Mine hits about 4moa right at 1000 yards (nearly no wind). I am new to long range, but that seems excessive for spin drift. Could that be from a faulty rail?

That could easily be from gun cant or scope cant.

How did you level your scope to the gun and do you shoot with a bubble level?

Level on top if the rail, drew a line on a wall with a level and aligned the reticle with that.
Bubble level mounted on the scope tube  (while aligned with the line on the wall). Granted I have never paid much attention to it. Guess I need to pay attention to that next time I go out

I installed the factory included aluminum key mod pic rail and just use a ADM QD mount on my Atlas. Works well. I tried a polymer BCM key mod pic rail and it had way too much flex in it when I load my bipod when shooting. The aluminum rail solved the problem.

Yeah I think the pic rail I have on there came with the gun.  I haven't really touched the gun since I bought it when it was released.  But now I have a place to shoot 1000 yards so I'm upgrading some stuff.  I have a Magpul PRS on the way, upgraded from a Gen I PST to a Gen II PST, and will also probably replace the hand guard with a MI MLOK one

If I may make a suggestion. The rail upgrade will have zero effect on accuracy. If I were you I would install the Timney drop in trigger. Its about $175 and is amazing. I know the Ruger trigger isnt horrible for a factory trigger but I hated the blade thingy. It just has a weird feel as none of my other firearms have such a thing. It also wasnt that crisp of a break. The timney was night and day difference. I would put $175 there before the rail upgrade. Just my $.02 worth

The ol' RPR not only shoots steel and 295-5x with Prime ammo, it goes hunting! This year it was cow elk.

Factory Gen 1 RPR with UBR stock, Eagle stock pack, SO Tech forestock saddle on on the forend, G27 grip, and Bushnell DMR-II 3-21x in TPS rings. Hybrid 46 can with 30-cal cap in ASR mounting. It's a heavy sucker in this config.

After a few days of turning the watershed upside down looking for the suckers, spotting bulls in the high country, we found the cows down at the mid elevations. A rushed 430yd shot to the neck after a 250y run up a small ridge netted a nice cow.

Nice pics, Scotty.
I just took my RPR out and rang a 12" steel in today's balmy 10 deg. F air with 15-25 mph cross winds.
Easily went 5/5 at 320 yds. while wearing gloves after dialing in my scope with the Hornady ballistics app.
I thought about going out Wed. in the -30 temps just to say I did it, but the 100-degree temp. delta kept me inside.

Yeah, last weekend I did a full cleaning (hadn't touched the barrel in ~400rd of steel matches, 3 seasons, and 3 dead deer/elk) and checked zero. Still solid, and the Prime ammo still well inside 1/2MOA.

I took this rifle to a small-town "turkey shoot" a year ago, the first event was a single shot closest to zero at 100y from a bench. Guys had custom varmint guns and such. I threw this on my pack and CBS'd it about 1/4" left of the dot center with an 18x scope. Game over. My buddy (a local) showed up near the end in shorts and sandals, just in time to put his money down for the 200y 1-shot center event. He didn't have a rifle, so I just said "use mine". He sits down, looks at the RPR, and says "how do you work this thing?" I had him put in the vertical correction and hold for a little breeze, he wins with a single shot about 1/2" from dot center.

I really want to cut the factory barrel down to 16", but the package shoots so good I can't bring myself to do it. I'll have to wait til the barrel is done.

Hey all,

Has anyone had experience rebarreling their RPR in 6XC?

I have shot a couple local PRS style matches this year with my 6.5CM and although I like the gun and how it handles, less recoil would assist me in spotting splash from misses.

I’d prefer to stay away from 6 Creedmoor due to the poor barrel life.

6 Dasher is one I have considered and heard of guys rebarelling their RPR’s to this round however, brass availability, fireforming process and trouble feeding/ejecting are things you hear a lot about with Dasher.

6XC seems to fit the bill with lower recoil, better barrel life than 6 Creedmoor, respectable velocities, brass could be a little easier to source but it can be found, should’t Have a problem feeding through mags in the RPR.  I can buy a 6XC prefit barrel from Krieger for $550.

What do you guys think?  Should I be looking at anything else??

What are your thoughts on taking a 6.5 Creedmoor and cutting the barrel down to 14.5”. Then permanently attaching a YHM muzzle brake and running a YHM Resonator 100% of the time. My reasoning for this is the rifle will be more manageable and have a cleaner look with the suppressor starting under the handguard and overall size when stored will much smaller when the stock is folded. Lastly, I know the 6.5 Creedmoor will lose velocity but not enough for it not to be effective within 1000 yards. Just thinking outside the box.

Have you tried running the 130 gr RDF or Berger at a little slower velocity? That might help with some recoil control until you either get the new barrel or change your mind. Or if you could find a 6mm Creedmoore you could always load it down a bit. And then if you need the extra horse power it’s just a load away.

Just from searching various web forums, 6XC seems to be getting in the neighborhood of 2000 to 2500 or so rounds before rebarreling.  6 Creedmoor seemed to be closer to 1500 rounds.  I do not have any experience with either caliber and have no first hand knowledge.

The load I shot in the match was 120gr ELD-M’s with 45gr H4350 resulting in around 2930 fps.  The recoil isn’t bad however, I still find myself looking to optimize the rifle for matches in my local area.  Distances at those matches reach out to 1200 yds for one and 550 for the other.

Downloading a 6mm Creedmoor to extend barrel life is something I’m still considering.  Trying to sort through the differences between 6XC, 6XCii, what Norma brass to get for either or fireform 22-250, which dies I’m suppose to use.  It gets exhausting.

6 Creedmoor would mean heading down to Sportmans, picking up a couple bags of brass, order some Redding dies and go to town.

So, I've been looking around, but haven't found it yet.

What is a really good load for the 308 version?

I've been trying out a few loads, bought some factory stuff, but I'm not really getting really nice groups.  Has anyone found a particular bullet, powder combo that is lights out accurate?  Is there a C.O.A.L. this thing loves?  I did some testing yesterday on my rifle. I was using a 168 grain nosler custom competition bullet, found my lands to be at about 2.845.  Anyone have a recommendation on how much off the lands I should go for.

If anyone can throw out some loads or suggestions, I would appreciate the info.

I've got what I consider two index loads that shoot well out of most any .308 I've used them in.  First one is 43 gr of Varget in FC or LC brass behind most any 168 gr HPBT Match bullet.  The other is the FGGM clone of 42.8 gr IMR 4064 behind a 168 gr bullet.  I use CCI 200 primers.  I also stick to mag length OAL of around 2.80".  Both loads are solid MOA with 5 shot groups out of my RPR.  I have not had a chance to fine tune loads for the RPR yet.

Since I have other .308s and no 6.5 Creedmoor my RPR will be getting a barrel change soon.

FGGM?

Thanks for the info.  I don’t have any varget yet, have been using cfe223 , also thought about 8208xbr.  I had good success with that in 223 loads.

I do keep seeing a lot of people liking varget for 308, so that’s probably what I will get.
