Hi All, My boy will be 10 next year and is going to start whitetail hunting. Picked him up a Ruger American compact in 6.5 Creedmoor for Christmas and need a scope for it We will be hunting in PA, probably 100 yards max distance to start so dont need to much magnification, correct? I haven't hunted in 20 years, but he has shown a lot of interest and want to nurture it, so wanted to get some advice as i am more an ar platform and semi auto handgun guy I was thinking a 2/3 power on the low end and 9/10 power on the high end so 2x10, 3x9 etc I am out of the loop on some of the brands to look at and was thinking $300 budget . What are some of the better options in this range? Are Vortex and Leupold still the go to in this price range? Appreciate any insight |

Scope - You can never go wrong with Primary Arms scopes. Rock solid performance dollar for dollar. Get something like a 1-8 power. Probably won't need much more than that for 100 yards. Caliber - I haven't shot any 6.5 so I can't really say on that. I know there's a reason tons of kids start out with a 243 or even a 270 if you want a bit more umph. You want something that will do the job without scaring him off or becoming recoil shy at that age. i.e. no .06 or .308 out of a bolt rifle at that age until he gets used to recoil. Rifle - compact but not ultra light. Remember the trade off weight vs recoil |

After researching the recoil on 6.5 isnt to much more than a 243 and about 30% less than .308. He did shoot his cousins 6.5 creed and said recoil wasnt to much and he shot pretty well with it. That is why i went with 6.5, as well as the fact that some family hunt black bear as well and it is a better option for that over.243 |

I started deer hunting with a 243 and a 3-9x40 scope. That particular rifle has more deer kills than any others of mine. The 6.5cm and a 3-9 will do him just fine. I'm partial to leupold vx options. Leupold vx freedom 3-9x40 is 300$ just about anywhere you go |
