Guys, I would like to upgrade my 15 year old R700, 30-06 rifle build with a M5 bottom metal system. I'll be ordering a custom McMillan stock for this rifle, which incorporates the bottom metal, along with other updated features like QD flush cups on the side as well as a 4" ARCA rail ahead of the bottom metal for my tripod. I'm not really sure which bottom metal system to use with this rifle. When I searched online I found Badger had three choices originally. The regular 30-06 long action (306-93, now apparently discontinued but I've found a company with some still in stock), the long action 300 Win Mag (306-83), and the long action Lapua Mag CIP (306-86). Since the 306-93 is discontinued, would the 306-83 be the best option to use? It looks as though 3.715" is kind of "standard" for AICS pattern magazines up to 300 Win Mag size. The good news is that MDT makes 3.715" AICS magazines for 30-06. Thanks for any help! I'm new to DBM system in bolt guns. I didn't expect it to be this complicated! |

There are 3 lengths for long actions with detachable mags as you have noted, personally, if you are going to use a mag I would do the 3.850" CIP mags, reason is easy, it will fit longer loaded "long" ammo that you might ever want to try..I went thru Accurate Mags for mine, I would use their bottom metal as well if I needed it(I run a chassis so bottom metal not needed)..With that said if you ever think you might really stretch a cartridge for the longest high BC bullets you might want to run the Wyatts blind magazine(just like stock with a hinged floor plate), the big advantage is it will hold cartridge as long as just shy of 4.00"... it is the longest mag of either style systems made that I know of..You would have to talk to Wyatts about exactly what is needed and what's involved, I know it requires a small bit of work to install it, but it is the king if you load long and need the cartridges in a magazine of some sort..I hand feed mt super long stuff, everything else I mag feed.... https://wyattsoutdoor.com/product/cfe-09-magazine-box/ |

I was thinking that the 3.715" Badger M5 system with the 3.715" 30-06 magazines for MDT or Accurate would probably be the ticket. |
