I just shot my new build for the first time. It’s an Aero precision M5 Lower with an factory Bolt catch/Release, and an Aero precision M5E1 16” upper I shot the rifles today and it ran nice , with bolt hold open on last round and everything, however when I removed the upper to inspect it after I shot it, I found that it appeared that the Bolt Catch is lifting up high enough to grab the bolt to hold it open, and it’s left a small “Nic” tiny dent in the upper receiver Is this common? I did use my new P-Mag, and noticed that it does seem to sit higher than my Hex mags although I did not use my Hexmags only the P-mag Otherwise, I built the rifle using an VLTOR A5 Buffer tube, Tubbs Flatwire spring and an AR15 H3 5.4 oz buffer, and the Adjustable gas block included in the upper was adjusted out 11 turns from closed , with a max 15 turns To get the rifle to cycle reliable |

There's a big Aero thread that's sadly been archived https://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/-ARCHIVED-THREAD-Aero-Precision-308-M5-Everything/121-662611/?page=1 I would be really leery of using AR15-anything in the recoil system of an AR10-type rifle. Lengths are usually wrong...the last 2 or 3 pages of the thread go over some of those issues... |

The Thing is that,..This is how the AR.308 Works…The DPMS Pattern Rifle. What they did was Use an AR15 Carbine Buffer Tube, and took an AR15 Carbine buffer…Cut it down to make a “Stubby” buffer so that the longer AR.308 BCG could fully retract into the buffer tube…An AR10 Carbine Buffer spring was used. For DPMS rifles with rifle length buffer tubes…Everything is Normal as an rifle length buffer tube is the same for AR10 and AR15 Simply a heavy Rifle length buffer spring AR10 spring and buffer is used The Real Armalite 10 AKA AR10 used a longer Carbine buffer tube, for collapsing stock models, and an AR15/AR10 Carbine Buffer, only separated by weight an H3 Carbine buffer What i did , was simply use an A5 Buffer tube, The one I bought is specially made for an AR10 Anyway it’s an VLTOR RE-10/A5 It’s a little longer than an AR15 Carbine buffer tube People feel that having the shorter AR15 Carbine buffer tube and custom short buffer, is too light for this large rifle and that there is also too short of a cycle depth, ruining dwell time Some guys run these AR10 “Variants “ fine, with the Shorter AR15 carbine buffer system, while it seems most have cycling issues, to much BCG speed due to too light of a buffer and too short of travel I built mine as as close to the mechanics of a real AR10 “Armalite 10” as possible She runs really smooth, i just need guys that know these rifles to tell me , about it |

I can't say I have seen / heard of your issue ( the nick ) .... frankly, most issues , LFAR bolt catch wise, have been from a shallow cut BC channel , or from a burr. Any chance the bolt catch is a little "loose" fit wise , in the lower ? .... there was a tread, here ( ? ) , about the same issue a while back... was that you ? And FWIW... for DPMS pattern ( AR15 carbine RE ) KAK makes a 2.5" 5.0oz buffer. Originally the KAK 2.5" was listed as 5.4oz, the 5.3oz... and now 5.0oz... god only knows why the slight weight reduction. And both the 2.5" buffer and the 3.25" patterns have same measured cycle depth. DPMS used the AR15 carbine RE , mainly for parts commonality. "Kinda" Same reason for the slightly shorter DPMS carbine gas tube length v. the Armalite gas tube length. Ultimately, the Armalite was kind of a scaled up AR15 ... purpose built for the 308 cartridge, rather than adapted to a 308 like the DPMS pattern. |

Well yes the DPMS pattern and AR10 Carbine versions both have the same cycle depth? But that is happening by Shortening the Buffer to allow for that travel? I cant help but think that this is still a problem, ..? Or maby it is simply just having more options available for weight As far as my Aero Precision M5 Bolt catch, it fits well in the lower..yet it seems to raise up high enough to cover the whole bottom part of the bolt |

Basically, DPMS wanted to use as many off the shelf parts as possible.... regardless if the were better or not. Is one "pattern" better then the other one ? Ehhhh... Ford v. Chevy type thing. Would I prefer one pattern over the other ? Sure, but it isn't a deal breaker, since we ( anyone ) could just change the parts. I would be far happier if there were only 2 true patterns overall. IE, not 6 different DPMS pattern uppers to lowers, and various DPMS pattern small parts. ( Bolt catches, take down pivot pins ( length and location ) , small measured different dimensional differences ( off set BCG bore axis "heights" v. buffer tube bore axis locations .... having a slightly higher bore BCG axis, means the manufacturer hasn't copied anyone else... so no patent infringement... but that means the bolt catch needs to be purpose built ) Heck even different DPMS rail height patterns exist... this rail sits slightly high than that rail height, with various heights in between.... from the various manufacturers of "DPMS pattern" LFAR's. All of what I have mention occurs with Armalite pattern LFAR's as well. Thankfully... at least a lot of the important "parts" remain common amongst the DPMS pattern... Barrel nut threads, barrels, triggers... etc. We, in the AR world have gotten so used to the luxury of a AR15 "MilSpec" guideline... that we just expected that in a LFAR. FWIW... the short 2.5" buffer hasn't caused any issues for me. I use both setups, and really don't prefer one over the other. ( Ford Chevy thing again ) As for your ding... I would watch its progress... or contact Aero, and see what they say. Or carefully look over the "interaction" of the various parts and see if you could remove some material from the bolt catch contact point. ( alter the cheapest part first, always. ) It could be, that your Aero bolt catch is out of spec... so order a new one, and try it. |
