It’s been a very long time since I’ve setup a bolt action rifle. I recently picked up a Bergara B14 HMR in 300 PRC and need to figure out optics and mount. In the past I’ve always picked up a Badger 20MOA base and appropriate height rings for the optic and called it good. Looking through the picture thread I’m seeing a lot of unmounts. Are uni-mounts the new thing? If you go uni-mount do you go 20 MOA in the mount or the base? Does it matter? I have a lot of 0 MOA Geissele uni-mounts on my gas guns. Is something like that with 20 MOA base appropriate here? |

Your Geissele mounts are good mounts. If you mount a 20 moa rail on top the Geissele may end up on the high side. I am also in the 20 moa, or 40 moa, rail camp. It really depends on how much elevation you need and what your scope has useable. If you are shooting out to a mile with a good modern scope 20 moa will likely get you there. If you want to shoot longer then you’ll need to figure out what you will need. As to the question of a uni mount vs traditional, buy quality and mount correctly and you won’t know the difference. FWIW, my 300 Norma with 245 Berger’s can be dialed out to and beyond 2,400 with a 40 moa rail. The ATAC-r still has 3 mil left at 2,400 with the rifle zeroed at 100.. |

as always, it depends entirely on what you plan to do with the rifle. assuming that's a medium range big game hunting rifle that you want to keep lightweight, 20MOA base and badger rings are an excellent choice. 0 would also be fine. 40 would likely be a big mistake. |
| I run an MPA 0* mount on a Defiance 20*rail which will get me out to 2700 yards theoretically(113 for the razor and 20* on the rail). I went mount because I feel a quality mount is more likely to be truly zeroed between scope saddles, insuring the scope is straight...makes it hard for the rail or the action to pull it out of straight if any part is not quite square, where rings alone are at the mercy of everything else being perfect.....But thats not a carry everywhere weapon, on those I try to make sure everything is square and use rings, I do run a tall target and box test on all to make sure they do what I think they are doing.... |
