This is probably an insane flight of fancy, but here goes. I recently acquired some very nice solid tungsten penetrators that are made for 20 mm SLAP ammunition used in the Phalanx weapon system. They are shaped like a typical boat-tail bullet, but with very sharp tips covered a hard plastic caps. In their intended use, the penetrators have some kind of discarding sabot. They measure about .4708" in diameter. A standard bullet for .50 BMG is .510". It occurred to me that one could construct a copper or brass jacket to bring the diameter of the penetrator up to .510 or so, and hopefully prevent tungsten from contacting the barrel directly. My initial thought was that a fired .45 Colt case would be about right for a starting point. Being made of tungsten they are quite heavy - About This isn't something I would test in MY rifle. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this, or heard of anyone who has. I would cheerfully test the concept in my potato gun or a beater shotgun, but not the AR-50.  |

Swage 7mm Rem Mag brass or similar with the penetrator inside. Friend of a friend used to swage 7mm mag brass to .510, fill with epoxy and #12 shot for a huge frangible round. You can get off the rails with this sort of thing. |
