Someone at work was talking that he could shoot a literal 2" group at 1000 yards. He didn't specify how many rounds. How realistic is this? I'm not a long range shooter and it sounded a bit far fetched to me, but like I said, I'm not a long range guy. |
Almost assuredly BS unless he is a high level benchrest competitor. .2MOA at 1000 requires phenomenal wind reading skills (or shooting in a place with no wind), an extremely accurate rifle and ammunition (handloaded), and a very high magnification scope with excellent glass. They also shoot off of a special rest with micro adjustments. Here’s one of the best in the world shooting 1.3”. Again, unless your coworker is a world class shooter, he’s full of shit. How many rounds in the group makes a big difference. I had a co-worker claim something similar when I was heavy into F class. At the time the best 10 shot group I had even shot was 2.4" at 600 yards during PERFECT conditions. He was claiming 1/2" @ 300 for 3 rounds. I told him to show up for a match and set a world record of he was that good. It MAY be possible with perfect conditions with 3 round groups if you shoot enough groups to get lucky. But 2" @ 1000 will never be repeatable. |

I’d bet $1 his ‘shooting background’ was watching the Marky Mark movie ‘Shooter’ (and where he came up with his BS claim). I remember watching the scene where Michael Pena talks about the life size printout of his competition group at 1k, thinking, “Lol. That’s better than the current World Record at 1000” (the 5-shot WR in 2007 was 1.397”. In 2018, Mike Wilson set a new 5-shot WR of 1.068”). Someone who can, and HAS shot a 2” group at 1k, would be known in the competition circuit, and would have mentioned that they compete. |

He didn't really go into detail about it. He was mainly talking to the other guy on the job, I was paying attention to my awesome music playing through my ear bud. I've shot a pretty damn good group at 100 yards and made a few fairly long shots prairie dog hunting but 1000 yards... That's kind of a bucket list thing for me and I'd have to build a nice rifle for that! |

Both are 100 yards, as that's all I have access to in my woods. 10 shots on the first one and 5 on the second one. My 77gr TMK load is pretty damn accurate but expensive to make! One of my coworkers back in the day was telling me about his teenage son shooting quarter sized groups at 300 yards, off hand, with a lever action 30-30. I was like, man that’s awesome! I wish I could shoot like that. I would love to watch someone that can shoot like that. Let’s go to the range this weekend, I’ll even buy some ammo. He started doing some serious walking back on his claim. |
