Just got a 457 varmit. Building it out. Plan on getting barrel threaded soon. What ammo does it need to eat? This will be my first precision build. I got a brick of eley semi auto bench rest...outside of that just lots of cci, remington, and winchester stuff. So what do all 457's consistently like pretty well? Also, I looked on sgammo for sk ammo and they don't appear to have any. So if that's a suggestion. Lemme know who's got best prices on it. Thanks! |

It's really not possible to say what it will like. With rimfires you really need to try several kinds of ammo. I would recommend getting a box each of several in addition to what you have on hand. Wipe down the barrel and try one kind. Shoot several groups as it may "settle down" after 25 or so rounds. Then wipe down the bore with a few patches or a few passes with a boresnake if that's what you use. Repeat with the next type of ammo. Wiping down the bore between types and shooting several groups to let it "settle down" is necessary to really find what it likes. |

If price does not matter, try ELEY Tenex, EPS Match and RWS R-50. If price is important, test those types but add some lower cost options such as Wolf Match Extra, RWS Target Rifle and ELEY Target, Club and Team EPS. For me, it was important to know what the rifle can do (Tenex, R-50) and what it can do with lower cost ammo that I can better afford to buy and shoot. I use Wolf Match Extra, lose almost nothing due to the ammo (it's the archer not the arrow), but saved over half the cost. When you find one you like, buy at least a full case of it (5,000 rounds). Just do it. Remember, if you go for a lower cost option, you can always buy premium ammo for special events. |

Mine all favor SK/Lapua brands. Generally, the higher the price per box, the more consistent the ammo. Lapua X-Act should be more consistent than Lapua Center X. How it shoots in your rifle can only be determined by the Chrono and target results.
