| I am looking to replace the barrel on an old Remington 700 SA hunting rifle in 308 I've had for 30+ years. I've recently converted it from the original ADL stock to a MDT Field stock. I really want to do the barrel replacement myself so doing the research, how-to videos and prep work now and looking hard at EABCO barrels and NSS Criterion barrels as options. My question is regarding recoil lugs. The Northland Shooter Supply promotes their NSS Taper Lock Recoil Lug System that uses a tapered recoil lug. This is different from the standard Remington style straight recoil lug. Would this cause alignment/fitment issues The MDT stock that is made to accommodate the Remington style recoil lug? If so can a standard Remington style recoil lug be used with Criterion barrel and barrel nut? I ask this due to comments made by others recommending getting barrel, recoil lug and barrel nut from same manufacturer to ensure fitment. I'm sure I'm overthinking alot of this but appreciate any advice and first-hand experience |
| Measure your MDT and see what fits lug wise, I used to rebarrel my 700 with bartlein barrels, including sending them the action and squaring the action , they installed a thicker lug, which wasn't a big deal since I ran it in a MPA chassis, but when I replaced the action with a defiance and went to reinstall the Remington action in the original stock the lug pocket in the stock had to be opened up to fit the thicker lug Bartlein put on it..No big deal, a few minutes with a die grinder and it was good to go, but something to beware of...If I had to do it over, I would have run the stock lug, it never moved in thousands of rounds before, so no reason to think it needed a thicker lug...... |
| I have used the NSS tapered recoil lug on several Remage builds. For me, a home gunsmith, their system really helped keep the action and lug properly aligned. The NSS lug will fit anywhere a normal lug will, unless the rifle was already bedded with a factory style lug (not the case here). I ran the NSS in a Oryx chassis, and still have one in a Pork Sword chassis. |
