Hey, I'm looking at ordering a custom barrel for my AR-10, just wondering what you guys think? Would you do something different? The one company is doing a buy one, get 50% off that barrel for the next barrel, so I figured I would build the first one expensive.

I built a 22-243, which is very similar.
You have to decide the bullet you want to shoot. The 95gr SMK is a great bullet, but it will not stabilize in a 1-8 twist even when it’s hauling ass. The 1-7 twist rate will probably limit you to heavy bullets only. The 95gr. SMK is not cheap either. The nice thing is the 75gr ELD is fantastic bullet for only $20 per hundred. Even with a 1-8 twist I was blowing up some bullets in the 55-62gr range. This will only ever be worse with the 1-7 twist. It’s fun way to go, but the 1-7 twist will take a lot of bullet options off the table. If you only want to shoot the 95gr. SMKs then go for the 1-7. If not a 1-8 twist gives you a lot more flexibility. Who is offering this deal? If it’s only 1-7 twist rates there is a reason for that. |
