My Flagstaff we bought in May has a solar panel on top. How robust is this solar panel? Where the camper sits in Summer time is under a black 50 ft Walnut tree. The walnuts have started falling so I put a 2" thick piece of foam insulation on top of the panel just to keep the walnuts from breaking the solar panel. Was this a good idea or not needed? |

All of my daily drivers over the last 20 yrs have had walnut dents in the tops. No damage to the other campers, but they did not have a solar panel on them. |

Then put the 2" foam or whatever up there for protection then. I didn't catch your location. Does it get hot enough there, that the foam (if in direct or almost direct sunlight) could melt? If so, may want to rethink that. Or Put a tarp between the panel and the foam. Here is Missouri we have tons of Walnut, Acorn, Pecan and other trees that drop crap on anything under them. A bigger concern to me based on what I have seen the last 10 years living rural would be a small tree limbs falling and poking right through the roof. I think the membrane or whatever the roof skin is made of, is the same thing they make condoms out of. I kid.. But I have seen more than a half dozen nice campers get holes in the roof from falling branches or Sticks... One the last times we camped a few years ago, two of our friends had small sticks, the diameter of a pencil maybe poke through their roofs. One got their fixed and it cost them a few grand. The other said, I'll fix it, never did and it ended up leaking water in and down the wall and rotted the wall and floor. They wndwd up junking the thing. I don't know if its like this in other states rural areas, but a popular thing here it to build a carport over the Camper or trailer to protect its roof from sticks, hail, sun and snow... I run an internet company and I know we have installed our gear on 4 or 5 of them. I'd much rather put it on one of them than the camper. There is more meat to sink a lag bolt into or I can get to both sides to put nuts and washers on the inside. Whoever owned our place before us had built a really tall, engineered truss, Pole barn type of deal with only the back wall and far left wall and they parked their RV under it to protect its roof from the sun. There is even a power outlet on the wall, that I plug my camper in a few days before trips get the fridge cold, keep the air or heat running and batts charged. I dig it. I use it when I've got a lot of guests coming down and the house is full. |
