if your house is a long way from the road, how do you handle amazon/fedex/ups deliveries? my amazon driver today called my cell and told me their policy changed and they were not allowed to drop off packages at gates anymore. they could only leave them on porches. at actual houses. he suggested i get a "deck box" and put it by the gate with instructions for drivers. A neighbor has a large tote by their box and i asked about that and he didn't recommend it because the lids fill up with water. i don't even know what a deck box is. what do you use? (i wonder if he'd appreciate the irony if i ordered a deck box from amazon and he attempts to deliver it next week but isn't allowed to) |

They will last from one to ten years, and it's your guess which it will be. I've had both. Here's a link to one. * I'll talk more about this at the bottom though, so you know exactly what you're getting.* Somebody makes better ones I'm certain, but I always need them RFN and just grab one of these cheap ones. The BEST solution I ever saw when I carried mail on a rural route, was a little shack. It had a big pull out bin near the bottom. Not a drawer. A "rotate out" bin. Sorry I don't know what to call it. But the bin rotated outward and was big enough for almost every package I had to deliver there. I closed the bin and the back of it was shaped such that the package slid into the shack. (Shack was cute like a kid's playhouse). There were windows and a human door on the end of the shack. There were a lot of these on my mail route but the best one was made to look exactly like Caractacus Potts's laboratory from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was awesome. Crooked parts and all.  Now the tldr part about the deck box: They deteriorate somewhat quickly. But most of the ruination comes because the hydraulic dealies--the little struts--fail and you're lifting the whole lid. I've been through a few of these. Walnuts fall and break holes in mine too. I was trying to get rid of one because it was busted all to pieces, and I had it by the curb. For some reason our trash pickup people could not understand, "pick up that old busted up deck box" and it sat there for six months, in the ditch. I refused to move it myself (I carried down our 100 yard driveway. It's not that I can't do it. It became about "you have one job. I pay you for that job. Come and do your job. It's not that hard." I finally had to text pictures of the dumb box IN THE DITCH to a lady I know there and said, "can you get them to pick this up?" Anyway so some lazy driver who didn't want to bother to actually come to the house one day left a valuable package sitting ON TOP OF the deck box. In the ditch. Right by the road.  If anybody had wanted to, they could have rolled down the car window and just picked up the package off the top of the deck box.So drivers are used to those boxes. People know to look in them though, so that's what's extra good about the little shack. Evidently "so" is my new overused word.

Something similar to this one is what I use. I just drilled a couple holes in the side and paracorded it to my mailbox post so it doesn't blow away. It's lasted two winters so far. And that's saying a lot! Latching box And the water should run off of the top. |
Used this one for years, waterproof enough. It does try to bust apart when they drop in a case of ammo. 
The weakness is the pins that make up the hinges, there are replacement pins with keepers that stay put. |

our mail box is on the paved road almost a mile from our house. Our house is down a dirt road. FED eX and UPS deliver all over our here down dirt roads. They go through our gate and drop off. It's normal though we do have porch ( a few of them). our fed ex guys have AT tires on their trucks |

this is kind of embarrassing to "show off". i built this from scrap, probably fifteen years ago. it is about 30 feet in my driveway, in front of the gate. one day i will replace it with a more enclosed version. Attached File |
