| I need to buy a few pair of mid and low hiking socks. What brands do you guys recommend? |

I just get low-cut synthetic Haynes socks from Walmart. A thicker black sock, and a thinner liner sock - both full synthetic. For winter socks, I have a stack of fancy wool socks 14" high, varying thicknesses (Smartwool, Patagonia brand, some socks bought in Patagonia, who knows what else), and a 6" stack of over-the-calf basketball socks I bought at Walmart, which are fully synthetic. I'll typically wear the basketball socks as liners, with a wool sock over that, or just a wool sock or just the bare Walmart house-brand basketball sock - depending on the boot and temperature. The part in bold is the only thing that really matters. The Walmart house-brand socks, while different and deliberately thinner, they hold their own. Stupid simple. |

I think this guy’s experience level warrants listening too. I wear all kinds of socks. If you neglect your feet enough, eventually they become immune to most further abuse. Until they’re not, then try pills and profanity. Walk it off! |

I have to have double layer-made socks like these Wright socks at REI. Keeps my feet from blistering and burning from friction. |

Darn Tough or Farm to Feet. I prefer Farm to Feet for their business practices. Both have lifetime free replacement warranties. Merino wool socks breathe, are odor resistant, very durable, and far superior to any synthetic sock I’ve ever worn. For cross country skiing and snow shoeing I’ll add a thin polypropylene base layer sock. |
