Scout parent in Colorado. Our last Klondike bottomed out at -14. I use an Exped MegaMat with some ridiculous R value, coupled with a Big Agnes 15 degree bag and a Sea to Summit  Reactor liner. Wore clean merino thermals I keep just for sleep, and threw a Nalgene full of just off boiling water in the bag. Chocolate bar 20 minutes before bed. Slept just fine. Getting up and making breakfast was another story.

Another vote for tomorrow’s base layer. I always had issues keeping a sock hat on my head and found these. Absolute game changer to keep my head warm.

My scouts “pre shirt” at night where they sleep in the class b shirt for the next day. Does 2 things. 1- gets them in at least a dry shirt for the night and 2- makes sure they change clothes during out outings.

Car camping or backpacking? Hot tent or four-season backpacking tent? My winter sleeping pad is considerably heavier than my summer pad, so much so that I'm probably done doing any sort of winter camping that would require that I pack in a heavier load like I used to. My back simply can't take it any longer. If I'm winter car camping, I'd bring my MSS or something similar. I have a 0-degree quilt, but in the dead of winter even that wouldn't be ideal. I'd have sleep clothes to change into. If it's not a hot tent. I'm going to augment the sleep system with a few handwarmers at the beginning of the night. In the colder months I also wear a fleece balaclava to keep my head warmer. Nothing more miserable than not being comfortable enough to sleep
