My wife and I hiked to Frary Peak on Antelope Island today. Should offer 360 views of the valley but its still pretty hazy with the inversion. Only saw a small group of bison and no antelope, but on the plus side, no bugs. Temperature was good for hiking, very little breeze and about 30 degrees. Its about 7.5 miles round trip, with about a 2,300ft elevation gain from the lower trail head. We knocked it out in 3hrs 45min with a 20 min break at the peak for a snack and pictures.

Was up at Looking Glass Rock, NC, this weekend, climbing with a fellow Arfcommer. My dog now has is own down sleeping bag. Cut to size from one of my old ones. Same for his pad.  I stayed an extra evening after RTUtah headed home. I went to bed before 8pm and set my alarm for 11:45pm to break camp, hike back to the truck and head up to the Parkway for some photos. My dog was not cool with the middle of the night start, and stayed in the tent even after the poles had been removed and packed. But, I think the ridiculous start time paid off.

Sand Rock, Alabama. The antithesis of remote, but a nice place, nonetheless. The dog is really digging his new sleeping bag, but he doesn't understand why he doesn't get to use it much, since we seem to be up most of the night.  [these are just .jpg files; I'll get around to using the full raw files later; that should give lower noise, and better color temperature and vignette control, especially for the last one, which is stitched together from 5 separate frames, and I can see some artifacts in the stitch.]

Bumpski. Family was up at our cabin this weekend. Most of Utah is under an extreme drought, this area was getting pounded by rain for the last month. We had over an inch for the last week alone. It was lush and the temperature was awesome. I tried out my paddleboard at a nearby reservoir, it will take some practice. Very smokey from the Oregon and California fires.

Camped under a rock in September. No great scenic photos for this one.  That boulder is somewhere down there, not too far from the lake. Oh, and see that guy below me? Yeah, not really. Because he chose some really lousy, dull colors to wear.  Technically, this ledge is also a campsite. It's the "Yellow Wall bivi ledge". We didn't camp here. Some will. For us, this was a one day climb only, because we were taking a shortcut off to easier ground up and left, rather than tackling some of the more challenging pitches above.

Great Sand Dunes NP... In truly dry conditions, the dunes are an exhausting trudge. If you can get in there after some precipitation, and maybe some hard freezes, you can knock out the miles with a lot less effort. Winds are everything. With no wind, the dunes area an absolute joy. In high winds, and dry conditions, it's really challenging, anything less than a 4 season tent will have sand pouring in through any mesh - the sand will blow up between the fly and the canopy, and sink in through mesh in the canopy during the night - sometimes the only thing you can do is just place a jacket over the head of the sleeping bag. With no winds, you can just open bivi and enjoy the stars. But the winds, for all their troubles, do make the setting quite spectacular with all of the blowing and swirling sand, so it's not all negative. This night was amazingly windless. My footprints stayed in the sand, retaining perfect detail, all through the night, and into the morning ... but that can make the photography a bit tougher, because your previous mistakes aren't being erased from the canvas when you try to re-shoot a certain scene...

From February of this year up in New Hampshire. Around -20ºF this morning per the nearest weather station. The panorama didn't really turn out the way I wanted, mostly because we started too late and couldn't make it to the bridge where I would have had a better view of the rising Milky Way in the mountain gap. Early February is just a difficult time to get images of the Milky Way, owing to the very narrow gap between the rise of the Milky Way and sunrise. Between weather and just the plain laziness of having a heated apartment to stay in, I didn't get back out to try to get better photos.

And much warmer conditions around Memorial Day down in Alabama. My tent and dog are at the far left of the frame. Not the most level tent site, so I had to stuff a bunch of clothes and stuff under the right side of my pad, just to level it out and keep from rolling downhill. Good view, though.

This one, well, this one is about 30 yards from parking lot and swingsets. Owing to it's ease of access, it has suffered an eternal battle with graffiti as long as I can remember. Setting that aside, it's has an amazing fairyland type of vibe. I think it's also gone by the name, Little Rock City, years, decades back - a nod to the famous, or infamous, Rock City northeast along the ridgeline in Chattanooga. |
