I have a lot of mature red oaks on my property. I've also been finding a handful of small white oaks (4-8" diameter). Would you cut back the immediate area around the white oaks to eliminate competition, open the canopy around them, give them room to grow? Also if there's a "cluster" of 2-3 white oaks, would you select the best one and cut out the other two to get a single best white oak, or just let them go to get the most acorns? Would be removing white pine, poplar, maple, etc. Oddly enough, most of the white oak aren't near the reds. |

Depends on your overall goals. If my focus was mainly wildlife/ deer, would favor the white oak and for sure remove poplar and maple. Might be kinder to the white pine as we frequently lack a softwood component on our properties. In groups of 3 that size, would likely leave all 3 depending on spacing (if >10' a part or so I would leave all). Hope this helps. |
