So, I've been exploring the MRE World a lot with my wife and son (miscellaneous dinners), and we've enjoyed standard USGI MRE's a whole lot. Today though, I got some individuals from TXREDNC (Thanks!). Halal, Kosher, MCW, etc, and I'm wondering what everyones favorites are? I'm going to be digging through these probably 1 a day or every other day, and just wanted to know what everyone liked best. Cheers!

"Favorite" may be really stretching it. There were some that didn't plug you up as bad as the others. Stay away from anything with seasoning beyond salt. The various pressed ham, turkey loaf etc meals was usually pretty safe. The veggie lasagna was acceptable mainly because it was tasteless, as was the frankfurter. The veggie omelet qualified as a war crime. Honestly, lots of folks were more interested in the included dessert. Two things you are going to need. Pepcid and stool softener.

Pork chow mein was pretty damned good, but sadly I usually didn't make it to the MRE pile until it was rat fucked and down to the ham and egg omelets and the ham slice. I think I still have an elevated sodium level from all of those ham slices.

Beef or pork patty, dehydrated. Otherwise known as the trackpad. You could never really reconstitute it, but you could make it soggy enough to eat. They always came with the best sides tho'

My favorite is the beef stew as long as it's warmed up. It's ok cold but much better warm. It's one of the few MRE's that's been around for decades. The others come and go. Not sure if it's in the current offerings or not, though. My problem is I have celiac so I can't eat a lot of the current offerings. Luckily, I only eat an MRE if I want to.

I'm okay with most of the new ones, but I absolutely hate those Southwestern black bean shit bags and those "Mexican-type" ones that aren't Mexican food. Also, those "pizza" things are somebody's idea of a joke. Chili Mac, Chicken noodles, Italian sausage and peppers are my favorites. I also like those First Strike bars which are like Power Bars. I have 16 cases I got for around $35 each and I will eat a meal when I'm too lazy to cook or go to the store. When I was in the .mil we had C-rats. Good times. |

For me it is a tie between the chicken chunk and sauce MRE and the barbecue beef brisket MRE. Both of them tasted what you would expect them to taste like and they were good. Neither of those two wrecked my stomach either. The chicken chunk MRE came with a packet of Buffalo hot sauce and tortillas, so basically I just made chicken burritos with Buffalo wing hot sauce on it. Also came with cheese and the wheat bread. The barbecue beef came with tortillas also so all you had to do was make barbecue beef brisket burritos. Mmmm delicious. |

Meatballs, beef, and rice, in spicy tomato sauce. Long out of print! I think it was #9 back then. Honestly, if you were truly hungry, and could heat them up, they were all pretty good. |

Back in the day my favorites were the ham slice ( banner day when you won the MRE lottery and got one) and the dehydrated beef patty IF I had time to heat it up. Break one of those things up and boil it in a canteen cup with a pack of ramen noodles and life was good.  Now I really like the sausage slices with peppers and onions and of course Chili Mac is always the right answer. |

I made it through SERE school outdoor survival course with a full MRE taped to my t-shirt under my flightsuit. They checked all the bags, they never patted us down. We were out there in November, cold and wet the entire time. My shelter sat on a knoll overlooking the camp where the rabbit was tied up waiting for its conk on the head to feed the group. I peered out of my shelter cautiously eating Turkey Diced with Gravy. Still the best MRE in my mind. 1986 |

Chili mac is a good call. The pork sausage in maple syrup was really good as well. Chicken Pesto Pasta wasn't too bad either. Ironically today I was clearing out my stash which just hit the 10 year mark, probably about 500 or so entrees headed for the dump this week. I don't think it's officially a MRE (maybe it is now) but the Bridgeford pizza slice isn't that bad either, I leaned on those heavily whenever I spent a few days at my dry cabin in BFE since they were so easy. |
| Always preferred LRPRs or Winter Rats. What you have now is a far cry and some say mainly junk food now. DoD changes 9 out of 12 every year if I remember correctly. Got 4 cases here in the shop for emergencies if DFAC shuts down. |

Had to eat MRE’s from mid 90’s to 2008. They changed a lot. Now they are very different and they stopped putting in Tabasco to hide taste since 2011. Pizza, jalapeño peanuts, and taco bowls! But I camp often and use mountain house or peak refuel since it’s just like real food. The PR biscuits and gravy is great! |
